my bow..i'm stuck with it. and game cameras tips?.

Postby pointysticks » 10 17, 2014 •  [Post 1]

because it is a really good bow.

Energy 35...by Elite. i kinda think i should have gotten the 32..or now even the Synergy..but i cant justify the $949 for a new Synergy..(are you kidding me?)..and just once, i sold a great bow and bought a crappie bow. never again.

i BH tuned the bow, and prepped for deer season. part of that prep was to switch to Rage Hypodermics. they really fly wonderful, but seem to be a crutch for bad form, bad tune, and bad consistency..they really hide alot of sins. i got complacent.

hog hunting is right around the corner. i feel really better shooting a burly fixed blade at hogs. i have two. Montecs and Slick Trick mag100. i pulled out my "dull" practice heads (painted black with a sharpie). first shot was a disappointing low and right by 2"..WTH??!!...i checked my form.and more importantly, my trigger pull. AHHHH.. my punchy trigger!!!...i settled in and shot around 10 broadhead shots into the bulls. what a bow!! i'm good for 25 yards in my backyard..but i know i can shoot much further. i hope to get a hog within 40..

now to cameras. i just picked up a Stealth Cam. wonderful!! drove my wife insane by making her walk in front of it back and forth. the thing is so clear!!

Any tips for hanging the thing? my main concern is THEFT. i got the lock cable, i got the lock box. i will double cable it. i hope to hang it up higher. i also am a month early..hog hunt area opens up Nov 22..so i think an early camera set up may not see the human traffic this public spot is used to. will i kill the tree if i lag bolt it in?

this will BUM me out, if it gets stolen on the maiden voyage. i've never owned a game camera before :(

I always lag bolt my lock box to the tree, then put a python cable lock through the box and have not killed any trees yet. It's a PITA to have to do it that way but hunting public land with lots of traffic it's the only way I have found to deter theft. It's not a guarantee that it won't get stolen but they will have to put forth and effort to get it. I alway try to mount mine about 6ft off the ground and use a wedge cut from a 2x4 to get the angle right. Here is a neet little trick I do. When you get your camera box on the tree, start the lag bolt and put the wedge behind it and adjust the angle then snug the lag bolt enough to hold the box. Take your cell phone and put it on top of the box so it is at the same angle as the box and snap a picture to see if your cam will catch the area you are wanting. Adjust the box and tighten the lag bolt and put your cam in the box and lock it. Hope this helps.

Wish I had a dollar for everybody who acts surprised that their cam was stolen despite the lock box and python locks. That stuff isnt thief proof. In fact all it really does is make your camera more visible to thieves and you're out even more money when its stolen. Screw all that stuff. Been there done that. Only way to prevent theft is to prevent your cam being found. Hang that bad boy abpot 12 feet up. No lock box no cable. Use a slate river ez aim mount to get it aimed right. Anything like a cable that goes around the tree will make your cam visible 360 degrees, dont use that stuff.

i might have mess up then. i hung it today...with the python lock :(

here is what i did to hopefully not lose it.

i hung it EARLY...a month early. nobody in california ever goes this early..we have the world series too!! :D hope everyone stays home.
i packed in a step ladder. lashed it to my pack. i got it about 2 feet above my hands..the tree is overhanging a small cliff..scary.
and i packed it in..i went off trail..up a steep 45 degree angle. i found several game trails, converging to one spot. i am way off the beaten path.

i think if i lose it, it will be becasuse i cannot find it again. i buried it in a deep ravine.

sucky part? i dragged my wife along, AND my 15 year old terrier dog. i had to carry him, most of the time. phew!!

i'm gonna go back in 2 weeks, move it deeper as foot traffic gets moving..

Mine look like this. http://imgur.com/7XoaYzA

Thats about 6 feet above my head. Much more discreet than an eye level cam in a metal box with a cable wrapped around the tree.

choosing between the 32 and 35 was like picking which child you liked better. darn near impossible.

eyes closed, i think they both felt the same. i went 35 because someone got in my ear, telling me longer ATA makes the long shot just a tad easier. jury still out. i am friggen accurate, but it could be many reasons.

when i picked up the 35, i muttered.., "why didnt they build a 33? now that would be perfect"

thanks to me, they now have a 33. hahaha..

Yeah. Longer ATA is more forgiving. I just loved the 35 in snow
