Only Four days left

Postby Lefty » 09 21, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Im taking a few days off later in the week.
Last year a number of people moved into the area I hunted ,.. so I sorta moved a bit further away to an area I use to hunt a bit
I spent a lot of time this summer scouting. Really not seeing a lot of sign, which was somewhat typical. but I wasnt seeing much sign within miles of the ag fields, nor at the water tanks. Still didn't bother me because the elk are so transient in the area. Then with all the rain I started to wonder. Why weren't the elk here? Still plenty of water and no sign of bull wallowing
I saw a pair of dark grey wolves in August.and have since ran into two elk hunters and a coyote hunter who had seen a pair of black wolves. Im about ready to blame the wolves,
I hit all the Premo rutting areas yesterday, and Im finding little sign of elk and absolutely no deer. Now that has me worried Im hunting an area that should be turning good,or hot .. and there isnt anything to indicate elk will be showing up.
I generally dont get bummed out hunting anything,.. as long as Im hunting, but the game just isn't there right now .
I told my wife if I dont have a good encounter this week Ill start hunting the mountains :o

i like a hard days hunt and a good days rest. If I dont have anything going on late afternoon I have a sweet trail I can set up on for nightfall.

Are you going to be able to come back out for another hunt?

Best deal is to keep the family interested.
One of my wifes greatest outdoor memories with her sisters was a hunt her dad took in all five of his daughters, Sleeping in the tent, giggling and having a elk herd run through camp.
Kids may soon be packing a bow with you, and it really doesn't get any better than that. My oldest two daughters just bought a bow, so we shoot together, every Friday/Saturday my wife and I went ATVing "some place" in elk country. My wifes nearly 60 she spent 3 weekends bear hunting with me.
Sadly one of my biggest family goals was a pack hunt with our horses, just never got it done

I hear you dennis. duck opener is this weekend. I have Saturday off and am taking my middle boy with me. the other 2 will be selling popcorn for cub scouts with mom. we will leave right after school and camp over night in a county park in the area with my cousins and his buddies. fall turkey starts oct 4th, so hopefully we can get a couple more turkeys for the freezer...

Our waterfowl opens the 4th, still no geese on the fields.
This year I plan to only hunt with my wife and daughters,.. most openers I felt like I was running a guide service.
Twice one landowner had me repaying favors for him,.. he had great fields but I don't like hunting with more than one inexperienced hunter/ gun handler at a time.

I don't have time to turkey hunt :(

I've run into the same issue as you...just not the wolves, but the game hasn't been there all year, and was hard to drag myself out of bed.

Low and behold my hunting partner sends me a message that a herd crossed the road as he was pulling up and bulls were screaming Tues night and Wed morning.
Taking tomorrow off work! :P

Hopefully things turn around for you!
