White River National Forest - Colorado

Postby Camo » 09 16, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Has anyone hunted the White River National Forest for elk. I am going with a couple of guys on horses for the 2nd rifle season. We plan to come in from the Meeker side along Morapos Creek area. What is the terrain and vegetation like in that area? Are there a lot of hunters there? Are there elk? I am going with some guys that have gone in that area several times with pretty good luck, but I have never been there. I appreciate any and all advice or comments about that area.

You'll be a step above most with the horses. White River National Forest is a pretty big area. I've hunted it from the south. Only driven through Meeker. I don't think you will be dealing with hard hunting conditions ie elevation, steep, nasty stuff.

Killed my first elk there when i was 16 (rifle season). Terrain was relatively mild compared to where i hunt in Idaho. Lots of grass parks and dark timber. Lots of hunters then also but that was a long time ago. :D

Lots of hunters, lots of horses. The hunters keep the Elk stirred up and moving but there are plenty of elk in there. Find a good spot and sit watching some good trails on a finger Ridge.
