I'm pretty sure Murphy's Law states: "if you only have an antlerless elk tag you will have an opportunity to shoot an antlered elk"

Took a morning trip up at 3 this morning and made it to work in time for a half-day. Since I have a either-sex rifle tag the only archery tag I have is antlerless... I was disappointed with zero elk talking but I did spot a little 5x4. I was hoping there were other elk nearby him so I snuck to within 100 yards and tried to see if he would lead me to the herd. No such luck, but it was cool to see some elk.

He was very preoccupied eating, so I like to think I could have plugged him if I had the right tag. No meat pole posting for me yet!

Very similar situation for us a few years ago. My dads group of hunters that I grew up going with mainly mule deer hunts in Colorado. One year only half of the group drew tags, so the other half including myself bought OTC elk tags so we could go. We spend half of our time helping the deer hunters, and the other half trying to get the older guys up the hills to find the elk. Of course of the 4 of us that had elk tags, 3 saw 170"+ deer. The one my dad saw walked passed him at 100 yards, and he swears it was 30" plus wide and 185"+. To go with that, only one of the deer hunters saw anything, and none of us had a shot at a legal bull.

Still, it was a great trip and I would do it again.
