Sighting In for Elk

Postby Buck » 09 11, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Hey guys,

I am going on an elk hunt in Colorado in October and have been trying to sight in my rifle. I live in New England and normally hunt deer with a Remington .308 carbine. I was wondering what you guys thing of hunting elk with a carbine. I am currently zeroed at 100 yards and I am trying to figure out what the bullet drop would be at distances out to about 300 yards using 180gr. I do not have access to a chronograph and it is also difficult out here to find a place to shoot at 300 yards. I have been searching the internet but have not been able to find much information on muzzle velocity of carbines. Any information that you have would be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys

I believe what your looking for is a Maximum Point Blank Range sight in. Generally speaking this somewhere around 1.5 to 3"s high at 100 yards ballistics depending. With that load, Im thinking your getting 2,600fps maximum out of your gun, probably more like 2,500 fps. The ammo you are using would help.

Google 308 180 ballistics, and enjoy more data than you can sift through. And remember, less gravity @ high elevation... ;)
