Changing tactics due to super moon?

Postby WYO_ELK » 08 28, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Just wondering if anyone will be changing their hunting tactics due to the super moon we will be having on September 9th? If so, what will you be doing differently? This is my first year elk hunting, so I will just hunt it as if it was any other day. Can't kill one if you don't get out there, right?

Not really changing tactics so much as I anticipate less activity during the day around the time of the full moon. Elk will use the full moon to feed later into the night as long as they can. Which intern then leads them to bed more during the day. So you have to be prepared for less activity during the full moon. The opposite can be said about the dark moon. Elk will feed more during the day and less at night when there is no moon light. These are general predictions of course from personal experience. One thing I plan on doing is more locating bugling at night during the super moon. This last full moon phase was awesome. I was camped in a valley at 10,200 feet and the entire valley was lit up and I could see several hundred yards without a problem. The elk were not actively bugling at night but they were moving around. My suggestion for hunting the super moon is to slip in to where the elk are really early and use the moon light to guide your way. Then when the sun comes up be ready to let your arrow fly. You can use your binos to help you move in quietly. Good luck

Great idea H20. I know some say the moon absolutely plays no part in their elk area but that's the opposite in mine. I have yet to see much bugling activity on or around a full moon. If you can't call 'em.....crawl 'em.

No change here! Locating elk full moon or no full moon is the key & challenge here for all of Sept. However I do find locating elk during full moon phases is much easier & extremely deadly for them. Getting position on them once located is certainly an effective measure. Personally I prefer the Full Moon times, it's proved to be a huge asset!

How so Paul? If you find time can you throw out some details? Realize youre hunting, but if you get a chance elaborate a little. Thanks.

I have also noticed, as H2O mentioned, that the elk seem to be spending lots of time up at night during the full moon, and seem to bed earlier in the morning also.Doesn't seem to be as much activity in the middle of the day, but they seem to move earlier in the afternoon.
On the flip side, lots of bugling activity during the rut,at night during the full moon. My hunt starts during the new moon, and I will be hunting all day, trying to hear rutting activity during the day, and aggressivly calling if the elk are fired up.

Pat, you bet! When a bright lit night by a Full Moon falls on peak rutting times it is absolutely a blessing! The elk become very active through much of the night therefore giving away their locations. Those are great times for "night bugling" especially an hour to one & a half hour before daylight. Locating elk is key here, once found the hunt is much easier! (grin) Does this help?
