Elk & Moose

Postby Mikeha33 » 09 03, 2014 •  [Post 1]

The area I'll be in has a decent number of moose in it. Will elk stay in a same area with moose without a problem? Have any of you guys ever had any experience with this? I doubt it, but I don't know, and I don't want to waste my time in certain areas if moose will somehow run elk out of an area, or if elk they avoid each other, or if it is of any concern at all???

ive asked the same question and everybody seems to say its not an issue, but it does seem to me sometimes that an overly heavy moose presence seems to coincide with a lower elk presence. not that a few moose around seem to run out elk necessarily, but at a couple cases like where ive put big mineral sites, or an isolated water source, when the moose get too thick i stop seeing elk as often. that being said, yesterday morning as i was just getting into my elk spot i was surrounded by moose. had a bull barking at me telling the whole mountain i was there. im still hunting the area tho

My only first hand experience is I have been calling in a bull and at the same time a bull moose came in, calling as well, and charged the area where the elk was bugling from before coming right at my call.

That's happened to me twice. That tells me they are territorial but I really don't know much.

My observations. Bigger whitetail and mulie bucks often hang around bull moose. They seem to like to share the habitat.
I think elk are a bit more willing to stay away from moose, moose like there own space.
Then to toss a mess in it one particular seep if I was sneaky enough often there were bucks, bulls and bull moose beaded within 50 yards of the seep

We had two young bulls living in camp for a week in Colorado, literally walking around brushing against the tent at night, was really cool. Plenty of Elk in the area as well, but they were not together!
