Nervous Grunt Tactics

So... you're the caller working a bull with your cow calls to your shooter 25-30 yards ahead and have persuaded him to come within the shooters bow range, but he doesn't have a visual due to the thick cover. Wind is in your favor, but the bull grows tired of looking for that lonesome cow (you) and gives you a nervous grunt. How do you respond???

Good question. What sounds have you tried with no success? I might think hit him with a level 1 2 or 3 threat scenario so he knows why the cow isn't coming?....

There are several things you could try. I have used a squirt bottle full of water and squirted the water on a flat rock to mimic the sound of an elk peeing. As a caller I am never stable or allow myself to be stable. I like to be able to walk away from the shooter and incoming bull to keep drawing him past my shooter. I break branches like I am a walking elk that is walking away from the bull. I have also rolled rocks down hills, You can pull grass to make it sound like a feeding cow. You don't always have to use a "call" to sound like an elk. Elk are curious so give them something to be curious about.

Don't change the subject! What I mean is that your'e a cow, he's a bull, and, you've called him in pretty darn close with your sweet cow sounds. He's saying, "show yourself now or I'm outa here"! Sooo, "show yourself " and be ready with a nervous grunt yourself to stop him for the shooter (two can play at that game). This innovative little tool is a new addition to my elk kit this year and I will use it. These things deploy at the flick of a finger, I'm not even kidding . Time to track that bull, get him deboned, and start packing.
