Weather around Snowmass Village?

Postby Miller1 » 08 25, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Anybody know what the weather has been like in the high country around Snowmass Village, [capital peak] area? Lots of rain? Cooler than normal, how are the service roads, would it be a dumb idea to bring a 2 wheel drive truck from Michigan the 3rd week of September?

It has been a very wet summer with thunderstorms nearly every afternoon. Depends on where exactly you're thinking of going, and the condition of the roads. Many FS roads are completely fine with a 2wd vehicle; others would make your 2wd decision appear very dumb. I'd give the Aspen FS a call and check on the exact roads you're considering. Also, the weather between now and mid-Sept can change a whole lot.

It has been a very wet and cool summer and the long range forecast suggests it will continue to be wetter than normal. I'm not a huge believer in long range weather forecasting, but even with an average year you could get anything from beautiful cool sunny days to rain and snow depending on elevation. There are plenty of roads in the area that are easy for 2 wheel drive when dry, but very difficult when wet or frozen. I would bring chains. Have fun and good luck.
