Advertising sequence

The elk aren't talking so you decide to try the advertising sequence from the most recent elknut dvd. Call, thrash, stomp and pay close attention because the elk are quiet and will sneak in without making a peep. BUT, now you have a bull bugling back to you! What are you going to do? Stay put? Move toward them? Keep calling the same? Change your calling approach?

It depends. I'll use the advertising sequence, as you mentioned, when the elk are quiet....normally earlier in the season to try to stir something up. Remember, this is a pretty likely time to actually "pull" a curious bull in to your setup/calling as the bull's testosterone levels are rising and perhaps, a few cows are beginning to show signs of estrus (all triggered by the amount of light let into their eyeballs/length of day). The rut is starting and the bull's have broke out of their bachelor groups and moving towards the fairer sex in an attempt to "herd up" and get some phone numbers. All that said, it depends. If the surrounding terrain is extremely thick (minimal shooting opps), and, the spot you're advertising from has some decent shooting lanes.. it may be best to stay with it for another 10-15 minutes. The bull you heard bugling may in fact, not be the only bull in the area and about the time you get up to move at him, you get busted by Mr. Silent. If the bugling bull sounds like a herd bull and is warning you to stay away from him and his ladies, you may at some point wish to aggress him (get in his comfort zone) and light him up. That said, if you're already realtively close to the herd, there may very well be a satellite or two that'll be sneaking over your way to see what's going on. It depends on the situation but if I was in a good setup doing the advertising sequence and heard a bull, I would probably hang tight for a bit longer and see if either he or another of his kind comes in to the sequence. Just my early morning thoughts.
