Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 20, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Holy catfish :o. After a loooong wait, it's almost upon us! The most wonderful time of the year for elk hunters. When do you step foot in the elk woods for fist time this year? I'll be leaving in a week from this Sunday for a week long early WA Roosey hunt, back for a painfull week at work then on to ID on the 12th of Sept for two weeks in the gem state. When is your first day in the sacred elk woods Elknuts?

Monday Aug 25th for me !! I'm already bouncing off the walls !! I was out at the archery range shooting 80 yards no problem then I came back to 20 yards and I could shoot the hairs off a mosquito !! My personal comfort zone for shooting an animal is probably much shorter than most of all you guys as I personally will not shoot an elk over 40 yards !! That is just the limit I have put on my self as I know if I shoot an elk from 40 and under I will hit the exact hair that I am shooting at !!

If you guys will shoot longer distances while practising a 30 yard shot will be a chip shot afterwards !!

Good luck to all you elk hunters this year !!

As I like to say " GET ELKAFIED !! "

15 days before I throw out some night time location bugles (looking forward to calling after all that practice) and glassing morning and evening before the opening day of September 6th. ANY Legal elk will be getting pursued.

West bound and down on September 5, put us in camp early the 6th, rest of the party showing up the evening of the 7th, and we're staying until 13th! Spoke with the regional game warden for about an hour yesterday and she was very, very helpful, and even told me where she'd been seeing the most elk activity in the last 2 weeks, and said in the last 3-4 days, that they've been starting to chatter a little bit more than usual for this time of year. Hopefully all the opening day guys don't push them too far out of the area! One thing that she told me, is that I was the first person to call and ask about a certain spot, that she knows for a fact holds a high number of elk, and some really good quality bulls, which is a few miles away from our camp, so that gives me some additional hope! I attribute me being able to pick out that spot on a map to a lot of you Elknuts giving A+ info and tips on why and where to be in a certain spot. Hopefully in a few weeks I am adding pics to the meatpole!!!

September 13th will be the first day in the woods. Headed up to the Snowy Range (and possibly the Sierra Madre's depending on pressure...) to hunt for 10 days. Possibly returning the last weekend in September as well. Depending on luck!

I'll head to camp on August 31, and hunt Sept. 1-2. Then head out again Friday to hunt Sept. 6-7. Back to work on Monday to send a big project off, and if that goes well, I'll be free to hunt from September 9-15. Fingers crossed. Not sure I'll get any sleep. But I'll be a weekend warrior if that's what it takes. Any elk hunting is better than no elk hunting. :)

Planning to be in the woods sometime the first weekend until the 8th(solo) then home until the 12th. Return to unit on 13th to meetup with the whole crew and set up full base camp. Will hunt and call for others until end of season. Would love to put any bull in the freezer early and have the rest of the season to call for team members. I wish all you Elknuts a safe and succesful season.

Leaving Mon the 25th for Colorado. If everything go's smooth, we will have camp partially set up Tue evening.
Set up trail cameras and tree stands on wallows on Wed. Little bit of scouting on Wed, Thurs. and Fri.
Pull SD cards from trail cams on Fri mid day to see any activity, which sets up my choice of where to go on opening day.
Opening day is on Labor Day Weekend, so I expect more traffic in the area and more hunters.
Fortunately, I have the entire season to get it done, so I can afford to be picky.

Just filled the truck up with gas and now I am packing my trailers and truck up. Plan on leaving a week from today (Aug.29th) at 6am I should be up in camp and set up by 2pm. Scouting and pulling my trail cameras that have been sitting on my honey holes for a month. I will be hunting for 30 straight days. Only planning a day or two in the middle of the season to do laundry and reload up on groceries. I went to Costco yesterday and spent 600 on groceries so hopefully I should be set for the month and won't need to replace to much. I like hunting every day and I hate taking days off. This next week is going to be long. But I have waited 335 days to get back and finish up some business I have with an old bull we named Ghost.

Good luck to all you guys making epic journeys to elk country. Though I am fortunate to live near elk, there is something special about that long road trip before a hunt and the added effort and anticipation. Kinda like long fore play.....Hope you score.
