Food You Won't Take Again!

We all love to eat but it seems we do our best to sacrifice a few luxuries when it comes both hauling them to hunting camp or on our bivy hunts! What groceries have you swore to never bring again because of taste or difficulty to prepare?

I dont take salty chips or jerky but I do take a lot of fruit and veggies from our trees and garden

Bridgeford Foods Ready to Eat Sandwiches. Against the recommendation of Slim9300 several years ago to not get them, I bought enough for a "one a day" sandwich for the entire season. After a few days, I couldn't hardly choke them down. Can't hardly gag down a clif bar anymore either.

Crap! I just bought 6 of these to try out this year. Planned on splitting them up with my mt houses. Any one kind that wasnt as crappy as the next?

The GU Gel "energy" things are one of the worst things I have tried. I gave up on them after 3 days of hunting.

Anything Bear Creek makes, the half hydrated onion flavor is sickening.

The only food I absolutely will not take into a bivy hunt is the Jamaican chicken, by Mountain House, ate part of this 6 years ago, and still can't get the taste out of my mouth. I don't know if they still make it, but it is not for me.

Tuna kits. I can handle the chicken, but for some reason tuna fish after hiking a few miles makes me sick as a dog.
On another note, the GU packets were an absolute lifesaver on the scouting trip we took. I ate one when I could barely pick my feet up off the trail walking out. Within a couple minutes, I was feeling better and walking fine.

I love the tuna fish mixed in with hot Ramen noodles. Add a little bit of tobasco, and it's pretty dad gum tasty!
I wont waste my $$$ on the Cliff power gels again though.

Staggs Two Bean Chili. It was fortunate that I was alone, the evening I heated up a can of that stuff.

Beef Stroganoff by Mountain House. I always see how people recommend that one and it's the worst one I've tasted....by far!

2 weeks of Gringo Chili. Lots of protein but very gassy food

most things that are left off the list result of too much effort to clean up after the preparation.
that is why the MH meals work. you got to eat something different every night with them though as they all seem bad on a back to back menu.

Peanut butter, bacon, and honey tortillas. They tasted great for the first 2 or 3 days last year on our backpack hunt, but by the 10th day it was like trying to swallow a giant slimy garden slug. I still shiver thinking about it. I also overdid it on the Cliff bars years back and have trouble choking them down now. I did have one of their builder bars on a turkey hunt this spring and it wasn't half bad, though. The last, and most important thing I will not eat on a hunting trip is one of those Bomb burritos at the gas station. It was responsible for a flying leap out of a moving truck in a torrential downpour while clutching a tattered roll of paper towels under my arm. Though the woods was my goal, where I landed on my flying leap was as far as I made it.

The GU gel that I brought on my moose hunt tasted absolutely awful. I think it was blackberry. They were tough to get down but I tell you what, when you thought you couldn't go any farther, those things worked miracles. No doubt I'll have them with this year, though they will probably be reserved for (hopefully) packing out elk.

Canned soup for me. The taste was fine but a big mess to pack out. Now I do the Hormel meals at Walmart. They have a big variety they pack good don't have to be refrigerated and you can burn the bowl it comes in when you're done. And cheap.

So I had to find out before hand how bad the Bridgford Sandwiches are. Yeah, they are not the best tasting thing. Not looking forward to getting rid of those.

I agree. Mountain House meals or the like just make me sick.

I'm with you. MH and cliff bars make me want to vommit. Last year I started dehydrating my own meals and they are awesome. I feel like I'm sitting in my kitchen eating a home cooked meal every night in the backcountry. Can't beat it. Elk pasta with both white and red sauce are my two main staples.

MRE Star mre's. I have a box of them sitting here and wont touch them after I tried one that had black beans in it. I couldn't eat the first bite. I'll stick with Ampak if I have to eat an mre again.

Dinty Moore Beef Stew. I'm pretty sure it's the same stuff they put in Alpo. You should have seen the way my dog perked up when she caught wind of it after I opened the can on a scouting trip.

I flat out hear you on that one Sean. Stag initially tastes OK, but within hours something bad always happened. I wasn't able to get close to elk for days - my farts were so bad that they were knocking flies off of fresh %hit piles.

As long as it's got a good calorie to weight ratio, i'll pack just about anything. Cold soaked Mountian House (any flavor) is my specialty and i don't have to worry about anyone else eating it. Im not real fond of cold spam with that clear jelly stuff on it though but i can still choke it down. Yuck! I challenge Twinkieman to eat MH Jamaican Chicken mixed with canned spam cold!
If you can stomach this evil mix then the elk Gods will smile on you.

I thought some of you would get a kick out of this.
Heartwood was leaving on a solo hunt on Labor day, and after reading his post, I did something about his challenge . I called his wife and asked her,to put a can of Spam into his pack. I will say that his wife was elated to help me out, along with his daughter as well. She said she would check his hunting food box, and help me out. While they weren't able to find a can of Spam, they did find an old can of potted meat. Heartwood said his goodbyes, left home, drove to where is was going to hunt, none the wiser. He arrived at his destination, shouldered his pre-packed pack, and set out on the trail., At sunset that evening, he decided it was time for a meal. He dug into his pack, pulled out the can of potted meat, looked at it and said to himself WTH? Then he saw the note written with love from his wife and daughter . Not willing to let us get the better of him, he decides to eat this can of potted meat ( he describes the taste as eating a can of cat food). Now feeling very smug with himself, thinking I didn't let them win, I ate what I packed in, he reads the ingredients. Rendered chicken parts, along with Tripe , the last laugh was still on him.

His wife, daughter, and I all got a big laugh out of this, especially when he called a few days later, I thought you all would get a laugh as well.
