Louisiana boys possibly in Oregon!

I just joined the site. As the title reads im from Louisiana and me and my buddy met a guy at work that will allow us to fly into Oregon and kinda show us around his stomping grounds. My buddy and I make an OOS hunt every year to a new state (whitetail hunts strictly on public land). We are fanatics about learning new areas and harvesting whitetails on places we never been to by just using the years of knowledge we have accumulated. Elk hunting is a totally different world for us but we have dreamed of shooting an elk since we could pull a bow back. Could yall please shed some light on what to prepare for as far as applying, things we need to look into, our chances of drawing, key things to pack, basically anything you think will help us? What have been your experiences In this area? This is a lifetime trip for us if we can get drawn. Id like a good bull but just to see that country and hunt in that terrain will be incredible. We are both are in good shape but I hear it still may be challenging. We will be hunting the northeast region in possibly walla walla or mt emily units and maybe surrounding units. Anything you can help me with is greatly appreciated. PM me if youd like also. I hope I can put one down so I can cook some elk for those boys in Oregon haha

Welcome to the best elk hunting site on the web. I have only hunted Colorado but I am sure someone will chime in and answer your questions about Oregon. What part of our great state are you from? With a last name of Theriot, you probably are not too far from me.

Walla Walla and Mt Emily take quite a few years to draw. Bow Hunter magazine publishes the best areas depending on what you want in an elk. If any elk will do or if You are looking for a large trophy. I would recommend the North East part of the State, unless you want a Roosevelt elk. I would stay out of the Cascade range, as the elk herds have really dropped off there, due to lack of timber harvest and predators. Check the ODF&W web site for hunter statistics. Do not go with just one year to help get a more accurate picture of what is happening.

Walla Walla and Mt Emily are both in the NE, but there are several open units and easy draw units also.

I don't hunt NE Oregon. I hunt the south half. My decision has nothing to do with quality of hunting. It is where I lived and worked. It is where friends hunt. To me the unit is not the issue. I tree stand hunt. I hunt about 1/2 acre. I have several 1/2 acre places in a given area. The management unit is not the issue. Where can I find a spot that will have elk within a relatively short amount of time? Personally I would have to do the same thing you will need to do. Review the ODF&W web site, Google Earth, and call people after you have determined the general area where you want to set up camp.
