Just wondering if I'm the only guy here who won't be using a rangefinder I usually am really close as some friends of mine will test me while shooting I'm only out to forty and don't find I need one at that range

First year for me, I am good at judging where I live, but the big open spaces out West throw me a curve. But, you should be fine.

If time, I'll usually range objects as soon as I get set up. 'that tree is 50, that rock 65, etc etc....then when an animal presents itself, you can use those landmarks to judge. An elk standing at 40 appears much closer than a whitetail standing at 40.

ELK are very big and can appear much closer than they are, I use a rangefinder just to be safe and accurate.

I carry one along and use it when I setup if possible. Sometimes things happen too quickly for it though, so I guess ranges by eye constantly and verify with the rangefinder.

i always practice guessing yardage then confirm with rangefinder in order to be ready for the situations that you cant range game before the shot. on a calling set or stand i always range landmarks around me so when the animal can see me im not fumbling around with my range finder anymore. this is my opinion and me, but im usually within 1-2yds on guessing out to 30yds but beyond that not very accurate especially when you talk about various terrains encountered. so why not use a rangefinder? using a range finder this way has never gotten me busted. the rangefinders for archery distances are fairly inexpensive too. i like to eliminate yardage as a possible cause for a miss. when i miss, cause like it or not we all do, i want to have eliminated as many of the variables that i can control as possible

If an elk is inside 40 yards I will never use a rangefinder unless I'm 100% sure it will have no idea (which is basically never). I certainly carry a rangefinder with me at all times though.
