Colorado 43/521?

Postby sojurner 65 » 08 11, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Hey all, in two weeks my friend and I are heading your way, my first elk hunt (at age 66!). What can anyone tell me about the Raggeds area? We've poured over maps and talked with biologists and have settled on that area as a starting point. We are back packing in for 5-6 days at a time.

Where are you looking? One thing I'll tell you is that a good portion of the Ragged Mountains is very steep and challenging walking. Other parts not so much.

its two weeks before you leave! you've looked at maps and have done the homework. not to many going to give you much info this late in the game. don't second guess your efforts in your prep work, I would bet both units hold lots of elk. Go hunt and have a blast! We roll in 3 weeks.:). best of luck!

Which side are you focusing on/basing from? As Ferris said, a lot of it is extremely steep. Are you hunting solely the wilderness area, or some of the bordering National Forest?

As a starting point. We are looking at both sides, Gunnison and White River. Yeah, I know from Google Earth pictures, those are some impressive rock piles. Would there even be elk in a place like that? I was wondering about Buck Basin.

Buck Basin is a pretty good hump from the road. There are elk around, but lots of outfitters that hunt around Horse Ranch Park. It's a beautiful spot though.
