Cow Calling Your Way in to a Kill

How many cow call their way in to an elks comfort zone? Bulls respond to cow calls and also call for you to go their way when you cow call to them. It's non threatening and very easy to raise the ante once in close. What say you?

Personally, I would wait until you are setup and ready before doing any type of calling.

I think this is in response to the calling seminar that Paul put on a few weeks ago. When you are out locating elk by bugling, if you hear a bull respond to your bugle with his own bugle followed by chuckles, chances are pretty good that he's trying to round up his cows and get them away from you. Paul said that you need to take immediate action and one of his preferred techniques is to start up a chorus of cow calls as he crashes straight at the bull. The cow calls are nearly continuous as he dashes to the bull that is now just about ready to get out of dodge for fear of that "bull" coming in to steal his cows.

I have never tried this, just heard about it for the first time at the seminar . . . but I'm going to try it this year if given the opportunity.

I've had it work a few times, just trolling along transition areas with very quiet non excited cow calls. Biggest thing is to stay on your toes, as most responses have been silent. They just show up, if your lucky they will snap a twig for you. One time I heard one twig break and thought squirrel? But luckily I knocked an arrow about the time a lead cow and calf came into view. The lead cow walked up to 5 yards put her head down and started eating, calf same at 7 yards and the third cow stopped broadside at 13 and put her front leg forward...I almost laughed outloud when I drew and all three kept eating. It just never happens that easy.

Yes, this is a non threatening Aggressive move on the hunters part, it takes courage & confidence in your actions to pull this off! As Tyler mentions a bull can be sound specific in his return calling, I also look for the lip bawl along with the chuckling, this means a hunters time is short & he needs to take quick action before this bull moves off with his cows. Cow calling your way at him throws a wrench into his escape thought, he generally will await your presence, advantage hunter as long as you have cover & the wind!
