Your Cow Call Of Choice?

Postby ElkNut1 » 08 03, 2014 •  [Post 1]

No doubt most of us will use cow sounds throughout the course of our elk hunts this year. What is your #-1 & #-2 choice that you generally have with you? My #-1 is the Mellow Yellow mouth reed & #-2 is a toss up between the Temptress & Hyper Lip Single! Both are excellent! What's your GOTO Cow Call?

I have 3 favorites, all situational. In no particular order, Long Ranger, Fightin Cow and Temptress.

Shane I will add in the doubles Travis sent me, High Plains call, I can do the 3.5s but it takes some work.
I have found a home with WRO calls.

Berry Game Calls Sleazy Cow Call reed. To mix it up a bit, I use a Carlton Bull Hooker internal reed call.

For over 20 years I have used the Larry D. Jones cow call. It is a tiny bite and blow thin call. I wear it like a necklace. I have just gotten the Orange Enrager, and if I am out calling, making cow sounds, I will make that my first choice. So maybe I have two first choices depending on the situation. Mellow Yellow is good too. I like that one.

I'm a new bow hunter for elk, but what is the best cow call to draw in a cow?

Thanks Swede and flystraight, The Glacier Country Hunting Calls Orange Enrager is a very good choice , but the Sweet Temptation single reed might even be better choice for just cow sounds. It is currently being used by 5 State Champions, 2 Rmef World Champions,(Those are ones I know about) and countless Hunters that know about it. Also the High Heel Hottie is a fantastic bite call that, usually takes less than 3 minutes to learn how to make fantastic realistic cow calls.

You also want the High Heel Hottie bite call and the Sweet Temptation single reed diaphragm.
make some pleading calf sounds and a cow will come right in because of their maternal instinct.

Has anyone seen the Eastmans Hunting Journal July/Aug Special elk issue. 5 different in that magazine used Glacier Country Hunting Calls to call in and Take big Bull Elk. Tammy Munis has taken Two 380 plus bulls! Look for glaciercountryhuntingcalls.com in the next issue of Eastmans Hunting Journal.
I only tell you this info because I think some of you are missing out!

While I was typing this I got a pic sent to my phone from a former Youth World Champion caller with a picture of a cow taken on a recent early cow hunt in Oregon 2014. Apparently he was using Glacier Country Hunting Calls. Not sure if he shot the elk or if he just called it in. His text says he will call me in a bit.

Thanks to all of you who have ordered calls from us.I hope you have enjoyed my calling tips and sound clips. Troy GCHC

Out of the Wapiti River Outdoors line the Pink Lady is the call you want.
If I am perceiving your question correctly, basic herd talk of mews and calf talk will set the stage for where a cow would like to be. Don't forget to break a few twigs on the ground and add a few louder mews in to simulate the lead cow trying to keep the group together. Be aware that a lot of elk will come to this without a sound and that includes bulls.

Whatever they respond to! For the external reeds, I've had success with the Carlton Fightin' Cow call, Primos I Makka Da bull crazy, and the Bugling Bull Temptress.

I use both the mellow yellow and the rage. Am trying out the new WRO calls. Like them a lot. The triple is hard to blow for me, but every now then I hit it just right and wow.

I've got an autographed call from Rocky Jacobsen that i'm not sure what the name of it is but it will b the best sounding elk call I have & it has called in several bull's by its lonesome. I've been toting it for ab 3 or 4 yrs & I have just ab every call out there except for the GCH call's (which I will try) & I swear nothing comes close! Other's have stronger point's but sure enough sound like an elk, this call cannot be touched!

I picked up a Primos Mini Sonic Dome Double and a Single Sonic Dome. I can get both of them to sound like a turkey or kazoo.... It's not the calls, it's me. I need practice.

Reed calls, mellow yellow , raging bull and hyper lip double(red). Primos hyper lip double. I can make calf or cow sounds from it. But after using it for two weeks my lips are cracked and cut all to hell! But it is all worth it!!!
