Warming Up The Tent!

One of the items that i have not kept up with are "heating elements/warmers" that can be used for tents.

I don't use a wall tent as most of my hunting is prior to the really bad weather. That being said, sometimes it gets extremely cool so I need something to take the chill off inside the tent; especially if i'm resting for a day or first thing in the morningt.

I'm hesitant to use combustion type apparatus because of the monoxide issues. And hunting solo, there's not enough body heat to make a difference.

So the quesitons becomes: what is out there to assist in warming up a tent without the wood burning stove that will not kill you while you sleep?

Mr. Heater portable propane heater. We always have a carbon monoxide detector as well.

I use the coleman propane catalytic heater, no issues with carbon monoxide.

I second the MR HEATER. Never had a problem. I always crack the window and door a little to get a little cross breeze to pull the carbon monoxide out because I don't bring a detector with me. Never had a problem and it gets pretty warm pretty quick. If you are in a smaller tent a coleman lantern will also warm up the tent pretty quickly as well.

For basecamp, I'll set up a screen gazebo and line the walls with plastic (kind of the eating, meeting, planning cabin). I heat that with an old coleman heater (like the Mr. Heater but a bit larger) which attaches on top of a 5 GAL propane tank. For a small to medium sleep tent, as others have said, you've gotta be carefull with the fumes but they all have screened vents and doors, soo... this will be with me this fall if I want to "heat things" up a bit. The Primos Micron is a great little backpacking lantern, throws out tons of light, and, a lot of heat for such a little critter.

Again, watch those fumes. Went trapping with my younger brother one cold winter in NW MT in late 70s. We set up an old 10X10 canvas tent and thought we'd keep things a bit warm at night with a coleman lantern on low. I woke up in a haze sometime around 2 AM with the worst headache I've ever experienced and pretty much drug my groggy brother out into the snow. I think we were on the brink of not waking up, ever. A very hard way to learn a lesson.

If you are in a smaller tent a coleman lantern will also warm up the tent pretty quickly as well.

I think my coleman lantern will turn the trick; forgot all about it. thanks for the input. I found my answer............

Hot hands will warm up your sleeping bag but not a tent

Ok, here's my top secret way to warm up a 1/2p backpacking tent. Make a small steel container that will fit/hold an Esbit cube and set it on a small flat rock inside your tent, or just buy an esbit stove. 10 minutes before you roll out of bed, light the Esbit cube. It gives off a bunch of heat, burns for about 10 minutes and will not kill you inside the tent with normal ventilation. This works very well to take that chill out of the air.

My mom was always paranoid about CO2. Last winter my wifes co-worker, his wife, and two sons died of CO2
I use coleman CAT heater in my goose pit but I do not trust keeping my head too low. Again Im paranoid

I m not a backpacker, but do tent alot I winter camp too,As a Scoutmaster no fires in tents,
A warm bag and you can stay warm. when you wake you can have plenty of time to get out of your bag and get dressed.Put your clothes under or in your bag if you want to get in warmer clothes.Before my current bags I slept in fleece wader pants, over sized old-style huntign socks, polertec top.
Is your pad good/big enough. A friend who was an avid packer complained he got "cool". He was sleeping on a 3/4 ultra-light pad, no designed for winter camping
My wife is 60 years old , she still uses her goose down bag that is over 30 years old she stays warm to 25 degrees or so in a bag that doesn't weigh much any cooler and she wears sweatpants.
