Supplements during your hunt

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 07 26, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Besides the fine elk hunt chow cuisine, be it base camp or way, way backwoods freeze dried chow, what do you bring? I gulp a daily multi vitamin in the AM and am a big fan of ibuprofen for sore muscles before I hit the rack. Curious to hear what you folks take with you besides chow.

This year, I'll be hunting at 11,K to 12,K feet for the first time. Normally I hunt between 8,K and 10,K, but have had elevation headaches above 9,K . . . so I'm going to be taking a pill supplement that is supposed to help with that. I bought it off camofire, I'll have to go look and see what it's called.

Is this a spin off from the weed smoking thread?

I'll second the Captain Morgan! My "high country mixer" is Tang.

Multi Vitamin. I mix a scoop of protein powder into oatmeal or cream of wheat, whatever I'm having for breakfast.

Last year I tried Altitude Advantage, It really seemed to help, I live at 600 feet and hunted somewhere between 7-9 thousand and didnt have near the issue with the altitude that I normally do, I was able to hunt super hard the first day and didnt have that "what the heck am I doing here" feeling Ive gotten every other time the first day out west.

Aleve, and some sort of supplement for hydration. Acclimate, or Cocohydro. Besides that sometimes I'll treat myself to a flask of whiskey or a beer or two. I like to keep the backpack weight low.

Tell me more about that. What exactly is it and where do you get it. Sounds interesting.

[url]http://wildernessathlete.com/shop/altitude-solutions/altitude-advantage/ [/ url] Every single time Ive been out west, the first day hunting, Id get short of breath and down right "exhasted" while climbing, not last year, I didnt once have to that feeling.

Headache, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, sleep disturbances, rapid heartbeat, loss of consciousness, death. At elevations of 8,000 feet and above, where lower barometric pressures and lower oxygen concentrations are encountered, any one or all of these symptoms of altitude sickness or AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) can occur. Wilderness Athlete’s Altitude Advantage is specially formulated to address the body’s extreme physiological demands of ascending to and remaining at high altitude environments.

Combining cutting edge science and ancient herbal remedies, Altitude Advantage is your performance enhancer for venturing into these unforgiving, “breathtaking” outposts. Trust us when we say, with Altitude Advantage you will never feel better when you’re pulling that last mile in the high country.* Gluten Free

Altitude Advantage Benefits:

Supports the body’s extraordinary physiological demands of performing at high elevation*
Helps reduce fatigue, inflammation, and lactic acid build-up*
Improves circulation throughout the body, including brain and lungs which are particularly sensitive to low oxygen conditions*
Contains potent, natural antioxidants to quell free-radicals produced under physically-demanding environmental conditions*
Increases enjoyment of high-elevation sports and activities by reducing the unpleasant, undesirable side effects of diminished oxygen and barometric pressure*

I live at low elevation and really can feel the effects of high elevation. Last year I camped and hunted at almost 11000 feet and took altitude adjustment and felt great. I also took four or five days at about 7000' before I started hunting so that probably had more to do with it but I'll be taking it again this year. I took CoQ10 also it has something to do with the heart and oxygen but I can't remember what.

Ghost, I hope this stuff works because I ordered some after reading your post. I normally hunt 6-9k ft and the closer I get to 9k I get headaches and this year I'll be hunting 8 to 11k so I hope it helps!

CSR,

Last time I was out In the Selway I was 38 years old, weighed 173lb was running 4.5 miles (at home) in just under 40 minutes on mountainous terrain, if I pushed it I could break 5:45 in a mile, heck I even got the chance to train at 5,300 feet at my buddies house for 2 days, before heading back in. The very first day, I hiking up a mountain going from 3,600 to just over 6,000 and half way up, I stopped bent over and thought to myself, wow do I really belong here in these mountains, still I trudged on and that feeling subsided by the third day. Fast forward to last year, Im 47 185lbs, running 2 miles on a treadmill at just over 15 minutes on my best day, doing hikes up to 9 miles with a 50-65lb pack. I Drive all the way to the Crazies, get out of my car put my pack on (70lbs or so) and off I go at 7,000 feet, 2.5hours and 3.8 miles later I setup camp, sure I was beat but not once did I think to myself, this is to much. I think all the back packing helped, but I was nowhere near the kind of shape I was in 9 years ago, not to mention I was 9 years older. Will I use it again this year, you can bet your bottom dollar, is it a substitute for being in shape, oh heck no! But I feel it helps your body make the chemical adjustments in your blood to cope with the altitude.

How many capsules do you take on a daily basis?

Man I hope it works! I live in Ohio and I can really tell the difference when I go over 8000 feet. I'm hunting NM this but I thought I was going to have to hunt CO. Heck you camp at 10000 feet. I know 4 years ago I did insanity 6 days a week and hunted MT at 6 to 9k ft and had the best hunt I'd ever had. Then when I got home I flew to CO to a ski lodge. I walked from the car about 100 yards and was sucking wind! Felt like I got punched in the chest. I'm 43 now and do 3 days of insanity and 2 days of p90x. I'm in good shape but not as good as before, plus I went back to smoking so that doesn't help! Lol

Another thing I forgot to mention and this came from a cardio surgeon is to take an aspirin or a baby aspirin or one of the low dose ones every day. He said for anyone over 50 which for me was almost 14 years ago to do it everyday. I don't always but I always do at high elevation

After the elk stew, spaghetti, chicken and noodles or other camp meal I sit back in a chair and have a couple fingers of single malt and a cigar.
As far as drugs my orthopod told me to lay off the Ibupro and take Aleve. Don't laugh at powdered fiber, I use it too.

You won't hear me laugh. A good dose of dietary fiber makes things better all around, especially in hunting where daily routines are interrupted and eating habits change.
