New to Oregon needing some elk hunting advice

Hello all, My name is Matt and have been stationed up at McChord AFB for the past 8 years and have decided to seperate and start a family. I am moving to Monroe, Oregon at the end of this month. I want to make it clear, I am not looking for a handout or personal hunting spots. I am solely looking for direction and guidance after eating tag soup for 6 years up in Washington for both deer and elk. I hunt archery and would like to maybe get some areas to start off with that are public land and actually contain some elk. It doesnt matter to me if it is eastern or western Oregon. I will be hunting with 2 other of my military friends and we dont mind the hiking or working for our hunt, we just want the chance. I havent had any time this year to scout and would rather not tackle the siuslaw national forest right off the bat. I got a controlled ochoco tag for deer this year with rifle, just need some good advice on over the counter elk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

polctd, welcome to the forum. If you like the Ochocos for deer, probably they are where you should start elk hunting. Getting a bull tag there is fairly easy. Knowing elk and the area you are hunting are keys to success. Since the Ochocos are a draw unit, you will likely experience less competition than in open either sex units. Do some summer scouting to find more precise hunting spots. Check ODF&Ws web site and examine the success rate for different archery hunts units. Get several year's data. I have seen some rather weird statistics.
