I needed a better pack frame to pack out game. The last few years I have hunted 3rd rifle with a few guys that have horses, and this year it is going to be back to doing the packing work myself. I found this frame on overstock.com I do not know if it is still there, but it is a good deal if you can still get it. I really like the way this pack fits. I got the frame and the pack bag which is perfect for bivy hunting or packing your way into a spike camp. It has plenty of storage space (5250 cubic inch). It also comes with the rifle holder which is great for a spotting scope tripod or sleeping pad if you are hunting archery. The pack comes off of the frame easily when you are lucky enough to need to use the pack to haul game. The freighter shelf and strap clips (included) are great for securing your loaded game bags to your back. When the pack bag is off of the frame it still has storage pockets that can hold your game bags/knives headlamp etc so you can still pack the necessary items to de-bone or quarter in the field. I am a skinny guy so sometimes the hip straps don't sit tight enough, but this pack is very adjustable and should fit most hunters comfortably. I have taken it out once and it is WAY more comfortable, and sturdy than my old external frame backpack I used for camping. I would recommend it to any one in the market for a new pack frame.

I just pulled the trigger on the Delorme Inreach SE. Found one on Ebay with a 50 dollar rebate (which ends today).

Not much the Wife could say about it, that is, if she ever wants to hear from me the last half of September

I really would like to pick up the in reach as well. It looks a lot more useful than the SPOT device. How do you like it so far? If I get one it will have to wait until next year though. This year I will have to rely on a map, compass and prayers.

Elk Mountain (Jeff) Is the Inreach pretty much the same as the "Spot" ? If not what is the key difference why you chose the Inreach? Thanks.

Easton 3600 full bore pack. figured I would give it a go since got a good deal on it. seems ok. . been packing about 50 lbs of rocks in it so far. overall it seems pretty decent. hopefully we will see how it hauls a load of meat out.

Think of the spot as a send only device. Not just send only, but send only pre loaded messages.

The InReacch SE can send preloaded messages as well, but think of the InReach more as texting via satellite. You can type and send messages as well as receive messages from people. Like the Spot, your messages will include your coordinates.

So when you are solo hunting and call your son to help you pack meat, the spot can only send a preloaded message and you will not get a reply from him. With the Inreach, you can tell him, "bring your meat pack and some food for me." He can then reply to you and say, "i will be there in 3 hours."

There is a new version of the InReach that has some navigation capability, but I have not played with it. The InReach is more expensive but far more capable.

Another thing I like about the inreach is that you can do a one month subscription where the spot you are locked into a full year. Makes the inreach cheaper after a couple years.

I just got my slip system in the mail today. I went with the elk rump slip cover. I really think this think is going to be great. Deploys in just a few seconds which is much better than the heads up or montana decoys. I'm excited about this one.

After all the rain last year in CO I decided to invest in some quality rain gear. Just picked up the FL Boundary Stormtight jacket in dry earth. Couldn't wait any longer for Kuiu to come out with solids. Like the slightly larger cut and have stayed dry and comfortable every time I've worn it. Plus I know FL customer service is top notch if I run into any problems.

Paul, the yearly service for the SPOT is 150 dollars I believe. And, I've heard some folks say it has failed to transmit on occasion.

The Inreach has a $14.95 monthly service that you can de-activate in the "off season" if you wish. So, thinking long term, I will save money down the road.
