I can find my camp on GE but I did not mark any way points. So what I'm looking for is a spike camp 1.91 miles away (as the crow flys) form my base camp. Is there a way to mark my base camp and draw a line or make a half moon 1.91 miles from base camp to find this spike camp. Is this possible? I keep zooming in and out and losing my spot and starting over. I was hoping there was a better way.
This year I'm marking everything on my Gps. I should put that on "mistakes" topic

Click on the little ruler on the top tool bar and it will open a window to measure stuff. I don't know if it takes into account terrain though

I would pick up the current copy of Extreme Elk magazine. Corey Jacobsen has written an excellent article on using Google earth for scouting elk. It will help you with your small problem. If you cant get a hold of a copy let me know I may be able to screen shot the online version and post it up for you.

I'm not sure if this is possible to do in Google Earth, but if it were me I'd create a range ring to find the spot. Go to Caltopo.com. Enter in coordinates or center over your known location of your base camp. On the lower left side, expand the 'Add New Objects' folder. Now click on 'Range Ring'. If you've got the map already centered on your base camp, you shouldn't need to enter in any coordinates. Just enter the size of the range ring you'd like (so multiply your distance by 2 to get your diameter). Now if it's not already using Google imagery, click on the box in the upper right that has your map layer, then scroll down and select Satellite under the Google layer. Now somewhere the circle should intersect your spike camp. If you want to see it in Google Earth, just copy and paste the coordinates into Google Earth. Or you can actually export the circle into google earth too. Just click the export button, and then down at the bottom select the KML format. It will download the file and click on it and it should automatically open the circle up in google earth.

Use the path button on top of the page. It wont allow you to rotate while using it but you can zoom in and out.
Try it a few times before saving. If you follow your trail it will account for elevation changes. You can save it as a path (base camp to wallow).
You can then click the path. right click. and show the elevation profile, this will allow you to see the elevation changes and distance more accurately than the ruler tool on the top menu.

^^^^^+1 on what Brent said. It is an awesome tool. Helps calculate realistic hikes over "unknown" terrain. Make sure you view the "profile" of that path. Several times I have drawn a path, then pulled up the profile, and realized HOLY ^&$# that'll take 8 hours to get up (or down). One of these days Ill show everybody the most awesome GE tip, I just havent had time to put in in writing yet.

Haha, no problem. The only time I screw around with the computers is at work too. It's a great time killer!

Using Google Earth on my ipad doesn't seem to allow me as many options as using it on my desktop computer. Am I missing something with my ipad?
