Sleeping Bag Location?

Well, where will you be resting sore legs this fall? Luxurious base camp, minimalistic/perhaps mobile base camp, home base bedroom and driving to hunt spots, back country camp, tiny town motel, back of truck canopy? What's your elk camp gonna be like this year?

WA will be a combo of my buddies house, back of my truck and Bivy camp. That's only because I hit the lottery on the elk draw.

MT will be 100% bivy style hunting. Waking up with elk bugling all around me (and nobody within miles) is one of the best feelings in the world.

I will be hunting from base camp with my son. Only a 2-3 mile hike each morning to our spot so it won't be too bad. Didn't see another hunter the entire 2 weeks last year so I hope it's the same this year.

Fairly basic base camp a few miles off the main road with a tent large enough for cots and elbow room, and a tarp stretched over the dining area. But also prepared and planning on heading back in further with a pack depending on conditions; elk and hunters.

How much weight do you carry while bivy hunting? I spike camp and the idea of a bivy hunt appeals to me, but I'm not sure I've got the strength to carry all my gear all day. How many days can you stay out before you have to get more supplies?

Back of my Expedition, Go Lite SL5, and maybe a Paratarp. After that, rifle season will seem like I'm staying in the Ritz Carlton when I'll be in my truck camper.

Base camp, on a cot and pad for the 6 of us. This year well be easy to set up, 3 are leaven 2 day early to get a jump on the elk. and to set up camp for the rest. They told me to grab my frame pack when I get there to help haul out elk. I hope so 0 for 6 last year, $3000 of tag soup.

"Base Camp" = lay the seat back in my truck (I keep an extra sleeping bag in the truck).

I want to stay mobile and keep my options open.

I will have everything I need to spike out if one of my honey holes is loaded up with elk.

Base camp for us. Where we hunt you cant get more then 3 miles from a road plus the weather is usually very warm. When we get an elk down it is rush time to get them out and cooled down.

This year will be my first with a wall tent in base camp. I've been sleeping in the truck mostly the past several years. I plan on bouncing from base camp to Spike camp when i hunt, but i can always sleep in the back of the truck too if i need to branch out and hit some other spots.

Lance... why not return to camp even if you are on them? You have no reason to spike out really. Camp is where you rejuvenate your mind and body man. If you are back in somewhere have faith. I don't know if you've done this type of thing before but you have a plan A and there's no reason for what is really another plan A. Use that camp to the fullest potential and be glad you are there. From there you can hunt a 4 mile radius which is plenty of country making big loops that put you right back near camp. If you aren't into elk in that much country you don't need to bivy... you need to pack out and hunt somewhere else. I have had tons of hunters say they were going to spike out from camp. Tons! Only 1, Welka, ever did. But he had good reason which was a really bad ankle which made it priceless for him to eliminate even a 1-2 mile hike every day.

Our camp this year will be packed in on horses 7 miles as the raven flies so probably 9 trail miles. Wall tent with wood stove cots etc. If the weather is unseasonably warm I may skip the canvas and go with the Marmot Halo 6 and no stove. Mature bulls only. After that if we need to relocate to plan B it will be the wall tent next to the truck for 3 days 5 point bulls or better. If that doesn't pan out back to the first spot looking for any elk. Plan C is actually plan A all over again only with lower standards. Like anyone I will thoroughly enjoy the camp 7 miles in. Necessary or not there's no doubt it feels good to be away from it all especially with good hunting right out the door.

What is the final determining factor in saying..."the elk are x.x km away, so I will set up camp here"?

Topography and land features, weather, movement?

That may be a poorly worded question.

Is it just, "here is a reliable water source, with a x land feature between me and the Wiley wapiti? How do you account for sure to change winds? Don't want to be too close for that reason, but also not too far.

Fair weather/Sept: Nylon tent or back of Pathfinder for 3 day weekend hunts. Oct: wall tent, heater, cots, jacuzzi, big screen w satellite dish, butler, etc.

Water is a main consideration. If you are packed in and can find it up high all the better because you won't have an uphill march each morning. If you are at the source all the better. Other than that I'm not trying to completely eliminate a morning hike to where I hunt. I certainly don't want to be camped out on top of the elk. All I need is a flat spot with water with reachable elk. If you are camped at the truck you usually hunt in one direction so you may relocate at some point. But it's easier to do that. if you are packed in and can't hunt in every direction there is so much to hunt it's less likely you'll need to. Also if you're packed in anywhere you camp is a bit of a necessary evil. At some point a few elk are going to smell you. if you know you'll be hunting one side of a slope camp on the other side. Other than that look for a suitable place to call home and hunt. I don't over think my location in relation to the elk too much other than that. Water!
