what about gillie suits

Ran into an archer who hunts SD grasslands
He said he wears a 3/4 gillie. The way he described it the gillie just covers his head and shoulders. He only wore his while on stalks he mentioned it wasnt cheap$175 but his best camo
Anyone here use one for deer or elk

There was a lengthy thread on this on another forum. The consensus which I agree with was that that's not necessary for elk and for elk in the mountains it would be way too hot. Lots of western residents don't even wear camo. I've killed elk in all green wool many times. Like deer movement is the key to being picked out by animals. I'd bet that after a day you'd be leaving it in camp.

Now for turkeys that may be a different story.

I wouldn't want to wear one. it would definitely be hot and the biggest draw back would be getting snagged on all the brush. I go through some nasty thick stuff....

I have not ever used one, however I have a friend who uses just the top for turkey hunting, and coyote hunting. He doesn't use it in temps at all.

This is one of my layout goose blinds. The neighbor kid thought it was pretty funny getting a picture while I was "resting my eyes"

If I was looking for an extra edge in the camo department it would be an easy decision. Two years ago I wanted a bug suit for spring bear hunting in Canada. So I looked at the popular Bug Tamer brand. Then I saw they make it in a Leafy Wear which I really like. I had guides who used Leafy Wear and also one who had a Leafy Wear ground blind. The stuff is not only awesome because it's truly 3 dimensional but the "leaves" are just stitched onto a mesh that doesn't insulate so it's really cool and comfortable. I use the suit for turkeys because camo is really important but also because in the spring ticks are an issue. I'm never hot and the birds never pick me out of the background. Since the invention of Leafy Wear camo I think ghillie suits are a thing of the past. If I wasn't worried about snagging on branches, which I'm not where I hunt, I'd use the bug suit in a heartbeat. But for elk my choice of camo isn't that big of a concern. For whitetails up close in the east... different story. They disappear first and ask questions later!

I have a two piece leafy suit in ASAT. I use it for whitetail hunting from the ground and have had many deer walk right past me, withing yards. Getting my bow drawn is another issue

I used to wear one of those two piece leafy 3D suits that are usually for sale around turkey season. Worked well keeping the mosquitoes off of me during elk season and wasn't that hot. The leaves will make noise when the wind blows and it can snag on branches.
Full blown ghillie style, no way. Too heavy and hot for me to be walking around in. Gotta give props to the guy's who wear that stuff in the mountains for their professional career.
