Elk Roll Call, Which State You Hunting?

What state or states do we all hope to hunt this year? We're pretty much sticking to our home State Idaho this year, how about you folks, where are you headed? Our drive is less that 1 hour to base camp, wahoo!!

I will be hunting Idaho for sure for elk and probably deer. I may hunt Washington for elk in the N.E. corner. I will deer hunt in Wa. I may hunt Montana for deer and elk. I am not certain on Mt. Yet. I really like that the archery season starts in Sept and runs to mid Oct. Then after a small wait you can hunt with a rifle into December. I also like that you can hunt any open legal unit in Montana. In fact I think I may start a thread to get thoughts on getting 2 tags in idaho or 1 tag in Idaho and 1 in Montana for elk hunting.

Every year I have this dilemma. The WA and ID seasons overlap, and I have to choose. Last year I did both, poorly. This year, I will probably do ID for elk and mule deer ("jungle"---I like that description), then head to SE WA for mule deer, then back to mossy WA for Roosevelt elk, then finally home to end the season with blackmail deer.

My wife never said a peep to me last year. How long will that luck hold out, should we start another thread?

I'm crossing my fingers for a draw in NM so that I can bag my first elk. I haven't learned enough about OTC in CO to know what to do and my kids are still young enough that I'd rather avoid leaving them with my wife for a week. That's a big debt to repay

New Mexico draw result emails are starting to roll out. The website doesn't reflect anything yet, but the email I received says I did get my 3rd choice deer and a buddy got cow elk.

Now I'm hoping they just haven't sent me my successful elk email yet. Or oryx. Or antelope. Or ibex

I have to amend my above post.

New Mexico and Colorado. I got an email this morning that I won the Valles Caldera lottery. I thought I struck out because according to the back door stuff and I couldn't add a license to my cart and it still said pending last night.
I doubt if I'll actually hunt Colorado. But my son/hunting partner will accompany me to New Mexico, then after my hunt we'll head north probably for a short hunt for him.

We drew the New Mexico unit 16A mobility impared hunt with a rifle, Myself and my Vietnam Veteran Friend , his disabilities are more severe than mine but we have some good maps and close friends to help put him in the right location to take a good bull, also the elk will still be vocal at that time so maybe they will be able to call one in close for him.

Right here in Kentucky. Both my boys got drawn for archery cow tags. They drew 1000 tags total and had about 45000 apply. Can't believe both of them got drawn. Hunt starts Oct 20 til Jan 19. Lots of time to chase them around. Good luck to all.

Looking at Northern NM around Coyote in the Santa Fe National Forest. Have hunted the San Pedro Wilderness of 6A a couple of times and it was beyond great. And toying with Montana & Idaho possibilities. So, i'm not 100% sure yet. Being retired and on my own provides flexibility.

I'll be hunting rifle elk in MT this year , first hunt there. Colorado posts soon -home town so archery elk there regardless if I draw a limited tag. I divide 4weeks of vacation for hunting - but I just scored an archery mt goat tag here in Colorado which is gonna eat some of my elk time. Elk/goat archery combo? Not sure I've heard of that one

Idaho. With no luck drawing in Nevada, and Arizona, its OTC for us. We were happy to learn that Idaho's new 10 year plan did not change the fact that we can still get our preferred unit with an OTC tag. We know our unit, it is like a second home to us. It is very fortunate that a few states still offer OTC tags, which affords us the opportunity to hunt elk every year. Side note very impressed with the IDFW getting input from hunters and actually listening to what we had to say.

Western Washington otc and hopefully a special permit draw. Hopefully this year will be there year I connect. Been into the animals almost every year but just haven't been able to pull it off on the east side so wet side for bulls it is this year!!
