. . . and so . . . it Begins!

Postby LckyTylr » 03 10, 2014 •  [Post 1]

The long trek to September officially began for me this morning. 2.5 mile run. My goal is 10 miles per week, shouldn't be too difficult . . . as long as I can resist the snooze feature.

I set my alarms to "motivate" me.

Monday: "$1,100" - the cost of my Wyoming draw, license and tag
Tuesday: "Quitter" - I figure nobody, especially me, wants to be called names at 5:30 AM. It's just enough of an insult to think of how silly I am for setting my alarm to say that, then I get to thinking, then I'm not sleeping anyways . . . ah sh!t, I might as well go run.
Wednesday: "Number 1" - Going for my first elk, it's been my number 1 goal for the last 5 years. I have decided that the Elk Gods don't think I have earned it yet. I'm going to earn it this year.
Thursday: "Lazy Bastard" - another insult to spur me into gear
Friday: "Dig In" - Nobody wants to wake up early on a Friday and go run, especially when the wind is whipping or the rain is coming in sideways, or . . . or . . . any number of other excuses. This will be good conditioning for the 4th day of my opening weekend when it's too hot and the bulls aren't bugling, I'll want to quit and come home early. None of that this year, September is too short.

Anyway, just my plan. I have been avoiding this day for a few months, I have really put on a few pounds this winter, it's the first time I have ever done that and I feel old. Damned kids.

Congrats on your decision to improve yourself! The fewer excuses you have now means any situation that comes up in September will be a breeze!
Your kids will see your work too.

Good luck on your journey!

I'd rather be lucky than good. Which brings up the question do you really need to do all that when you have lucky written all over you?

How many years have you hunted elk? This will be our (my son and i) second year. We are 0/1 but I barely count last season since we were truely clueless.

Sounds like we have some things in common. I haven't been this passionate about anything in a loooong time.

How you feeling tonight tyler? Mix in hikes if you are getting too sore. I only run about once a week, sometimes less but I workout a lot. If I run too much I get very sore. Great job. Stay after it

Indian Summer . . . I'm lucky in life and in Whitetails . . . but I'm anything BUT lucky with Elk. I can't afford to leave it up to lady luck, if that were true, I'd have a VERY large 6x6 on my wall right now that out-lucked me three times last season.

Lark, I have been pursuing the mighty wapiti for 5 years now . . . they outmatch me every year. Last year and the year before, I was actually in really good shape, probably better than I had been through my 4 years in the military and 4 years of college. I dedicated myself to killing one, I did, in my mind, everything right and put myself in the right scenarios to do so. I was Not lucky. :-)

ctdad, I'm feeling fine. I'm good with staying hydrated and I recover fairly quickly. I'll be running again tomorrow. I'd love to mix in hiking, but my work takes up a lot of my time. If I want to spend any time with my young Son, I have to do so as soon as I can spring myself from work, meaning that I have to exercise in the dark hours of the morning. I'd love to buy another gym membership, but I know that if I do that, I'll get distracted with upper body and will lose focus on legs.

Thanks for the support everyone, I hope that all of you are committed to conditioning this year. let's not allow that to be an excuse.

Way to go Tyler! Just don't burn yourself out before hunting season, make sure to pace yourself bud! (grin)

Tom, that's awesome you & your son are so passionate about your elk hunting, very cool. I gotta ask, who keeps who going, who's the motivator? (grin)

Tyler, keep it up! I hope you can get it done this year. I can only imagine your frustration.

Paul, being that my son is almost 12 I have to let him be a kid. I am the one doing all the research and detail planning. We practice calling together and I make him read a bit but I want it to be fun, and not a chore. He stays busy with school (six A's and one B+ on his last progress report), he plays Lacrosse, and in the summers he mows neighbor's lawns and scoops dog poop. He made a small fortune last summer! He normally plays football in the fall but has chosen to skip it this year to hunt with me.

Who motivates whom? I don't know. I think we feed off each other. :)

The elk will not disappoint!!! Especially when you find yourself in the middle of a herd, or face at a 20 yard face off with no shot and you swear they hear your heart beating out of your chest!!

Bill, you are so right, nothing like that sudden adrenaline rush no matter how many times we've been close or can hear them coming to the calling, nope it never gets old! (grin)

Tom, great thinking! I have 2 sons, one is a hunting machine like myself & the other has no desire at all. I support both in their endeavors & although both have elk hunted my youngest Shane who doesn't care for hunting does his own thing. Even when they were young like your son I did everything I could think of to make it fun as I did not want them to think it was a chore. Sounds like we think alike! (grin) Good luck & have fun partner!

Glad to see all of the enthusiasm with everyone getting back into their grove. Hopefully the weather will improve for those of you in the colder climates.

I was a worm-squishing-machine this morning!

Rained last night so the crawlers were out this morning desperately searching for dry ground. I certainly did NOT enjoy it, felt bad for the brainless little buggers.

Got another 2.5 in today. Legs are feeling good . . . in a sore kinda way. :-)

3 Miles with the pack last night. I can tell my hips needed the workout. It's nice to see the pavement again, been about 5 months since I've had a decent road to hike. still 3' of snow in the woods

5.3 miles . . . ugh! Was NOT hydrated enough for that. Guess I'll spend the rest of the day thinking of creative fluids that may or may-not rehydrate me. ;)

Okay, Fine . . . I'll hydrate first . . . and then see what happens. After all . . . I have a resident DD for the next few days or so.

Half Marathon, that's NUTS! Good on you though, that's awesome.

I did a race last summer in early August (Ponderosa Pine Relay). 12 team members split up a section of 200 miles, running round the clock until it's done. The course is a mix of old Indian Winter Migration Trails, Logging Roads and some small sections of roadway to link together. Each team member has 3 legs to run. My first was a 9.6 mile trek along a river (going upstream), starting at 2:30 PM and 97 degrees. There was ZERO wind and the loose gravel path along the river just sucked up all of my energy. My next two legs were fairly easy, a short 3.5 mile run through the dark and a 5 mile dash to the finish in beautiful 72 degrees and sunny. It was an awesome race and perfect timing to prepare for Archery season.

12.3 miles . . . I'm not sure I'll ever get there. I suppose I have to at some point, my Wife has done one.

if you think a half is nuts, try doing a full! I am pretty sore today, but nothing comes to the hurt of a full marathon. not to scare anyone, I didn't train like I should have for either race.... that race sounds fun!

Did a six mile training run tonight. Felt good. I should be in good shape for the first weekend in May. But only a half to start. Not sure I have a full in me. We'll see how the half goes first

I've been playing pick up basketball at the college rec center the past two weeks. You get out what you put in, and I have a hyper competitive streak in me, so I always end up playing till leg muscles shut down. I can't bring myself to just run for the sake of running.

That's pretty smart. I wish I could do something like that. Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere near a rec center and if I did, I'd have to work around everyone's schedule. I could have pulled that off when I was single with no kids. :-) Now I have to run alone and grit through it. Oh well, every time I get to the end of "this street" and try to turn around, I convince myself that I need to push harder if I want to kill my first bull this year . . . go go go!

Basketball . . . nevermind, I never did get good at basketball. My coach quickly realized that I couldn't dribble or shoot . . . but I sure loved to play defense and steal the ball. He'd sub me in as much as possible just to be a pesky defender to whomever was scoring a lot (almost subbing on the fly like Hockey - every timeout or ball-out).

some people just cant run. for some reason, I enjoy it. it kind of gets me high. it helped me quit smoking 3 years ago. everytime I got edgy, I would run and then feel like a million bucks. oh the lungs hurt for a while and those coughing fits weren't fun. but as it got easier and I could go farther it also became a challenge. maybe that's why I enjoy it...

tyler, that's how I felt in the beginning. just one more block. it got me from my first mile, to first 5k, to first 5 miler, and then 10k, and marathon. first its blocks and then its miles. just one more mile.... hell I still think like that. btw, have you got a run in lately? day 3 now and my muscles are starting to feel better. If the weather stays nice, I hope to get a run in by Saturday.

Make sure you guys print off some pictures of elk camp, scenery, maybe the trail that really kicked your butt, or the elk that are on the next mountain. Pin them up were you see them every morning. I put some on my bathroom mirror and some where I change into my running cloths. I also pinned up last years unfilled tag.

Great motivator

I remember that video, looked like guys that did their homework and earned it. Except for that one guy, killed his bull on the logging road . . . I'm kidding, good on them for getting back in there. I'm a bit jealous that Idaho doesn't have more areas like this with nice (fairly) level logging roads that are closed to motorized vehicles. I know that most of the roads are closed during rifle season, but not archery. It amazes me to see the number of lazy archery hunters that I encounter on trail heads, just buzzing around. I expect it of rifle hunters, but not archery.

Oh well, another 3 miles tonight after lacrosse practice.

Small hands . . . make my feet look bigger. :)

Just ran another 3.5 . . . darn calves.

I've gained 8 lbs in the last 8 days . . . so, let's get this straight, I stopped drinking beer, I started drinking more water, I stopped snacking like a wild hog . . . and I gain weight. Sweet!!!

I don't really care, I feel stronger than I did last week, which is the end goal.

nice! don't worry, that's your body rejecting all the healthy you just injected into it.... the rest of my body is healed up nice, just my knees are still sore. I am hoping the run after work on Friday night wont suck too bad. its going to be short, don't want to push it. been getting back into sit up, push up and jumping jack routine again. try doing 110 jumping jacks in a row, that will get you breathing hard.

I did another 3.5 on Sat and Sunday, only 1.5 tonight as fast as I could. Broke under 10 minutes, I haven't done that since I ran a 9:36 mile-and-a-half when I was 20 in the AF . . . so feeling good about that. Definitely winded, but I felt strong considering I'm 30 lbs heavier than when I was 20.

We had an awful workout today! It is called "Sevens"

7 Handstand pushups
7 Thrusters 135# ( you haven't lived until you have experienced these gems, bar in front rack position do a front squat and press weight over your head when you come up)
7 Knees to elbows ( hang from a pullup bar and bring your knees up to your elbows)
7 Deadlift 245#
7 Burpees ( these need no explanation)
7 Kettle Bell Swings 70#
7 Pull ups

7 rounds. It took me 52 minutes. Definately a grinder.

Good on you, that sounds miserable.

Is that at a cross fit gym?

I really want to get into that. I can only find one gym with an opening during a timeslot that fits in my schedule . . . and of course, it's the most expensive gym in the city on the other side of town.

Yeah it is a crossfit gym.

That is the toughest workout we've had. I enjoy the routine so far. It isn't for everyone and I would recommend anyone thinking of doing it sit down and discuss your goals, wants and needs with the gym owner prior to joining. Not all Crossfit gyms are created equal. Put them through an interview process

Yeah, I guess it is a pretty good pace . . . just looking back on my younger days when I was running a 6:45 pace everywhere I went. I hate to admit that I'm getting older, always telling myself that if present-day-me picked a fight with 20-year-old-me . . . that present day me would wipe the floor with younger-dumber-me. I still think it's true as I was much more timid 8 years ago, but I was certainly a lot faster back then. I know I can still run that pace, but only for a mile or 1.5 . . . then everything just tightens up on me for carrying the extra weight.

My goal is to train hard enough not just to be "strong" for the mountains, but for the first time in my life, I actually want to cut weight and try to slim down. I'm 6'1" and 200 lbs, I'd like to start Elk season at a fighting weight of 185. I think I can do that, I hovered around 185 for about 5 years and only since I have had my first child have I started packing it on. Enough already!

Keep it up everyone, sounds like we have some determined elk nuts amongst us. :-)

Good stuff guys! I'm not in the running game either but good to see many are, I love working out & do other things to strengthen the core as a whole. Most importantly, do something to maintain the physical abilities required as an elk hunter especially a runner & gunner & packing meat for miles on your back, it does require a certain amount of conditioning to make it more enjoyable than a treacherous chore! (grin) The older we get the tougher it gets!

I have to re-group on my exercise program. I did 10 weeks of the 13 week P90X program, then just got totally bored with it. Don't get me wrong, I had good results, just got old. I am waiting for our snow to melt and the ground to dry, then I am getting out the pack and doing a lot of hiking. I'm too old to run.

toby, I hear you on the knees thing. I have an iffy left knee and she was talking to me after that. in order to get my red card I need to do 3 miles with a 45# pack in 45 minutes. I live a bike path loop that's 3.1 miles. so I decided to throw a bag of softener salt in the pack and go to make sure I could do it in time for the test next week. I had to jog 4 times for a short ways because my fast walking pace wasn't cutting it.... boy, did I feel like I accomplished something when I was done :D at least 45# will be easier.

I got in 4 miles this morning and was definitely still feeling the effects of Friday's workout. struggled to keep an 8 minute mile pace and I didn't have much left at the end but I finished it. Only a month until my half. Going to have to start more running.

Ha, now that's funny. I have really long legs. Try this next time you are jogging . . . just speed walk the 2nd half of your run and see if you can maintain the same pace. You might look and feel stupid, but it works a whole new set of muscles, it's easier on the knees and surprisingly quick. I can speed walk almost as fast as I can jog at my regular pace.

You runners are nuts. Yuck.

A good one for you to mix it up. Give "Cindy" a try, no special equipment and not one of the stupid hard workouts. Good whole body workout both strength and cardio.

5 pull ups
10 push ups
15 air squats

20 minutes as many rounds as possible

I did 18 rounds and got the 5 pullups on the 19th, so 18+5

I will occasionally do a routine similar to that. all easy stuff. 25/30 jumping jacks, 5/10 push ups, 10/15 situps, 25/30 jumping jacks, 25/30 butt kicks, 5/10 push ups, they threw in a 2 min wall sits also... 10/15 sit ups. and then repeat. this takes away the, been sitting on my ass for too long feeling.....

I'm going to have to do something different. For the 3rd day in a row, I didn't run because both of my knees hurt too much.

I've never had lingering joint pain like this, other than when recovering from an ACL replacement.

Kinda nervous, it's like I have nerves getting pinched between the bones.

ohhhh, so long legs is having knee problems! sorry couldnt help it :D the bitch about running is its the best and worst for you. most everything hurts for me also. i gauge it by a how it hurts, some is sore right away and goes away, some comes on later and hurts likes a mfer. i was invincible until i blew out my left knee after going 0 to 8 miles in less than 3 months. i now take a conservative approach now, hence my slower pace. i would rather put in the miles at a slower pace now....

I can't run much without getting very sore. I like to do a lot of cross training to avoid overuse injury.

I need to do more of this type of stuff more often but I finally hiked the La Luz trail in the Cibola National Forest to the Sandia Mountain peak and back down. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Luz_Trail
GPS said 15.8 miles, 3881 foot ascent up to 10,880 with an overall average speed of 1.8 mph and moving average of 2.2 mph. 7 hours 15 minutes moving and 1:39 not moving, including the nacho's at the top. One knee just about trashed by the time I got back to the car and two days later my calves are a knotted mess.
I can officially say now that I hate boulder fields.

My jogging is paying off! I put two of those traffic sign sandbags into my pack and did the hills w my wife and dog. I didn't even feel the 48lbs! It weighed more cuz I carried all the water. I put it on the scale afterwards. Sick!

Sounds like you are getting to it Gary . . . keep it up!

I fell off the bandwagon the week my daughter was born. It's difficult to wake up that hour earlier to go run when I'm up 3 times a night to help with the feedings and diaper changes. Ugh. I'm hoping that in the next few weeks, she will start waking up less in the night and I'll get more sleep so I can start running again.

Fun stuff to follow
My first elk hunt 22 years ago I spent 30-40 minutes on a Nordic track swam a mile each morning
Yesterday a 4 1/2 mile walk in the mountains looking for bear , my new hip after 11 1/2 months let me know I have a ways to go, No more running for me
Sort of a funny, I shadow a behavioral student in PE . Most of the time is spent in the weight room, I was doing preacher curls with just the bar. A new student to our building said something about the low weight, Another student said, " He been lifting that bar since we go into the room".

Light weight ;)

Congratulations

In a competitive Voyager pack race I tied with a fellow, 210 lbs. .43 of a mile in 3 minutes 16 seconds including up and down hill and 100 yards sand pit.
Just remember some steroid junkie from Nebraska beat us; burning some lungs on that run
The year later, I was 24 years old, I took a buddy on leave from the Marines checking beaver traps in January , deep snow in and out of water, a 1 and 3 year old beaver in my pack. got back to the truck and my buddy mentioned he was ready to ask me to slow down. That same winter, I pegged the power squat at the Mn Vikings training center in Mankato and was offered full scholarship on the track team at MSUM

I guess my real point is you can be older, fatter, more out of shape and still enjoy chasing elk with a bow :D

When My wife first moved to Minnesota she showed up at MT Kato to ski, she was flabbergasted and shipped her skis home

The hike though heavy wooded area kicked my but this weekend, knees are still aching. I fear I'm not in good enough shape for a hunt. The trip re-enforced the requirement to drink plenty of water, I ended up with a dehydration/altitude headache that evening.

Saw two deer and a wolf which was cool.

This is one of the clearer flatter sections that I was hoping I would find some game trails and other signs of elk and deer.
