I'm reading this article right now. It discusses a # of issues that don't typically get mentioned in threads here. Archers, have your read this, and if so, how valid is it? thanks in advance for the feedback/discussion, trying to return to archery this fall after many years away from it.

Wow that is some heavy arrows. My arrow weights is 450gr. I would like to hear other opinions about 600gr arrows they used in the examples. Are you going to change your setup based on the is evidence?

There's some good info to be derived there but a bit on the over done side in many facets. Personally I'm not a 2 blade fan & most likely never will be.

I'm one of the few two blade fans and do love thier penetration. One thing in the article that seemed overboard was the foc %. I thought I've read that you should be 12-15% foc for best accuracy and anything over 18% you start loosing accuracy? The article makes it sound like more the better.

I also think it is a bit overboard in some areas, but he makes good points and we can certainly maximize penetration by using some of the ideas mentioned. I just don't think it is necessary to go to the extremes mentioned.

The information is valid. If you want to maximize penetration in any situation on large game then shoot a heavy, heavy arrow and completely forget about speed.

If you are going to hunt Cape Buffalo, Asian Water Buffalo, wild bulls in Australia etc your guide will want your arrow weight up around 800gr. They wouldn't even let you show up with a 400ish grain arrow. The question becomes is this type of set up really needed for an elk. They are quite a bit softer than the dangerous stuff mentioned above.

IMO your setup is adequate for a good shot. Your penetration may suffer if you make a less than ideal shot.

Your set up should be fine. If I could generate that much speed, I would up my arrow weight to about 500 grains, you would still get 280 fps or so, would gain a lot of momentum, and broad head flight would be a lot less touchy. Take a look on AT and see how controversial arrow flight is in some of the threads.

I have a pretty unscientific observation on this. Recently bought my 4 Y/O son a Diamond Atomic. He is currently shooting it about about 15lbs draw weight. It comes with 3 carbon arrows. They weigh 217gr. I took a bunch of my broken FMJ's and cut them off and put 125gr points on them (all I have) and he is using those as well. They weigh 421gr.

Have a youth target from Cabelas. For the most part, the little carbon arrows bounce off when he hits the target. The first day I actually moved him back further from the target as they were nearly hitting him when they bounced back. If they stick they only penetrate the outer plastic cover and not the foam material of the target. The FMJ's I made penetrate about 3-4 inches into the foam every time.

More than adequate. I'm shooting 390 gr arrows about 15 fps faster and on broadside shots with SlickTricks, passthrus aren't an issue.
