Montana OTC? Yep!

Just an FYI mostly for our newer elk hunters. On threads like the one titled "Roll call which state are you hunting" I read posts that say well we didn't draw or maybe well we weren't able to make plans earlier so I guess we'll just go with Colorado OTC licenses.

I just wanted to throw a reminder out there that Montana has guaranteed either sex elk licenses available. Technically they aren't OTC, but technically they are. Montana has a drawing with an application deadline of March 15th. But they don't sell out their elk tags so they put them on sale on a first come first served basis. They never do sell them all so you can buy them all summer long. Pretty simple.

Montana has TONS of public land especially on the west side. Less hunters than a lot of states. And quality bulls. With a little planning and research it is very easy to find a good place to call your own with good hunting. Less hunters can mean more vocal elk too.

If you don't know where to begin or just aren't into the research or just want a tried and proven area to hunt look me up. For those not familiar with my services I provide elk hunting plans for DIY hunters. You get USGS topo maps marked with details as well as written instruction on everything from how to get to your camping area from your front door to where to expect to find elk. Also where to find local services such as meat processors etc. and a gear list if you need one. Camp at the truck, pack in... the choice is yours based on your goals and abilities.

But really my point is just that there are other good options out there. Other states such as Idaho, Washington, & Oregon also have OTC elk tags. Think outside the box folks. Good luck this season wherever your travels take you.

But consider what you get for your money. That license is good for either sex elk for 6 weeks of archery and 5 weeks of gun season. My Wyoming tag cost $1171. I guess that makes Montana look a little better.

If all goes well I'll have both come fall so I'll have 2 grand into tags. Wait... is that really all going well? Heck yeah! Especially if I manage to kill 2 bulls. Priceless.

What is the price of a Montana elk nonresident archery tag.

I bought my combination elk and deer tag during the draw and also paid for a bonus point. My total was about $1000. If you don't get the deer, it is about $150 less I believe. For $150, I figure why not carry the extra tag. I killed a nice mule deer buck last year while elk hunting. Some don't want the distraction though so to each their own.

joe, if I had that much time off to be able to come back for multiple trips, so I could get my tags filled, it would be a better deal.... that's even if the wife would go for it. I thought that nonresidents were forced to buy the combination license which included the deer tag. I wish the combi license was an option, not forced. my Idaho tag is just short of $600 which includes a $20 archery permit that they make you buy... I will pony up the bucks some year because I do want to hunt Montana. but that will probably be when the boys are out of the house and the wife would want me to be gone for that long

You can buy elk only for $826. All non res elk licenses include fishing, small game, & upland bird. I don't have time to fish when I'm elk hunting but I make good use of the bird by shooting grouse which are plentiful.

Bow hunters also need an archery stamp which is $10.

Don't get me started!!!! Talk about prejudice huh. Pennsylvania is the same. In addition to the regular hunting license bowhunters... who kill less game, have to buy an additional stamp to hunt that season. Drives me NUTS.

LMAO!! What did Forrest Gump say... stupid is as stupid does. And let's face it... sometimes a little stupid helps right. Insanity can be a key ingredient in killing elk. Should we hike down there into that hell hole even though we have no clue what's down there? Oh heck why not! You only live once. And besides... Longdraw's wife would hike down there and we can't let her make us look wimpy can we?

I remember my mother asking me when I said "I did it 'cause he did" "Well if your friend jumped off of a bridge would you jump too?" If I knew then what I know now my answer would always have been "Well mom, if there was an elk under the bridge then YES!"

Lol....the only difference between me and my wife is it takes me all eleven weeks to kill an elk and she does it in a day or two. Well and her bull is bigger than two of my last three. Oh yeah and no elk here
