Will Arrow Hit Higher?

Hi guys I am new to this forum and can say I have been impressed. I hunted Colorado in 2012 with no luck. Going back this year. I have been told by a few guys that my arrows may shoot high. I am from Southern and I do mean Southern Illionis. Was told that the thinner air would cause our arrows to shoot higher on target than here at home. We are taking target with us to check when we get there. I have not found anything to prove this, thought maybe someone here could give me a little more info Thanks Rodney

Welcome to our little camp RP. I think theoretically and maybe on a microscale what you heard COULD be plausible. However, in practice I don't believe you are going to see much of a difference. I lived in the "Life Elevated" state of Utah, and would travel back to Washington for holidays. I'd bring my bow with me so my brother and I could shoot at one of the local outdoor ranges which is essentially at sea-level. My bow shot just the same in Washington as it did in Utah, and vice versa. I never had to compensate going back and forth between the two states. Especially, with the shorter shooting distances in archery you are not going to have those same variables and amplified effects impacting your shot that you would have in super long-distance rifle shooting. At least not to the same degree. I think transporting your bow and bumping your sight out of position would be a likelier cause than air density. Either way it is always important to sight your bow at camp before the hunt, to make sure you are on your mark!

i watched a show with Randy Ulmer.

he said it does affect POI. his solution was to take a half turn out at the limbs. ME? i am not gonna worry about it that much. i tend to aim low when nervous anyways, and my accuracy is not as great as mr ulmers where i need to worry about that level of precision.

Randy Ulmer is right, but like Washington Wapiti, I don't see that much difference.

I know a golf ball goes farther at higher elevations but for a high speed carbon arrow (even an old school aluminum), I can't imagine the difference out to 40 yards is significant? Like you mentioned RP, bring your target and check it out when you get on site .. Oh, and welcome to "the" elk forum.

You should be shooting after traveling with bow reguardless and then you'll know and can move pins if needed.

I came to CO in 2012 for my first hunt, I thought the same thing. I camped at 10,500'. before I went hunting I shot into my target. everything from 20-70 was spot on. I didn't see a change in the least. my arrow was 484gr arrow traveling at 305fps. ive heard guys say they've seen a difference but not me

I sight in here in Wisconsin at 27 yards and am dead on in Idaho at 30 yards, been doing this for 15 years, same for the other guys I hunt with. I can't explain it, but I check it each year and that's the way it works out.
