Socks and underlayers

Crazy question I figure has been covered before, but what socks and underlayers should I be looking at for early September in Southern Colorado? I have good boots, slightly insulated and fairly warm, do I need syntetic socks, wool socks or what? Same for underlayers. Also, on a pretty tight budget this year. Thanks for any advice.

morino wool socks, also called smart wool. in the two years of september hunting in colorado i havent needed long underwear. the couple of times i have used it on cool mornings, i have sweated my ass off..... slow walking keeps me plenty warm. my thin jacket goes on if i stay in one spot for a little while. definately bring the long underwear along though.

I think a T shirt and a long sleeve shirt would be plenty. We hunted Idaho last year in early Sept. and had a hour walk to get to our spot, all I wore were these 2 shirts I bought them at Walmart for under $15 buck each. I found this

As far as sock my feet like Cabela's Ingenius® Series 10" Sock - Lightweight.

Smartwool or Point6 socks. I wear the same pair regardless of time of year. A pair that fit well in my boots. In 15 years of hunting Colorado i have rarely put on long underwear. I stay warm enough moving around.

For base layer, I have a mix of synthetics and wool that I haven't seen much of a difference with. Thinks from Patagonia, UnderArmor, REI and the like have all worked for me if I layer up and can strip things down.

I found that if I keep a moderate to slow pace while stalking I can get away with very little insulation even in single digit temps. So Southern Colorado September with lows in the 30s would be easy unless your standing still for long periods of time. What will make you sick or even kill you is getting wet from sweat, sorry for preaching to the choir.

I like wool socks. I have blue point6 socks I have to hide from my wife. She liked to shuffle around the house in oversized wool. Great sock. I bought them before I even knew what merino was. They are awesome and buy me time before the stink sets in.
