Help me improve

Postby navet » 04 30, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Here is a short video of my form while shooting a bow. Yall have been very helpful since I have begun shooting again after a 25yr lay off.
Thanks for your help. Any suggestion welcomed.

Overall your form looks pretty good. The bow arm kooks good. Hard to tell but it looks like you have a semi relaxed grip. However your draw arm is coming back at too much of an upward angle. It may be that your peep is mounted too high in the string causing you to compensate in your draw angle. Here is a pic of proper form for reference.

A closer up picture would help. It would also help if what you are aiming at is at shoulder height so the bow is straight out in front of you rather than slightly angled down in the video. Things I see, you have about 90% of your weight on your front leg, even the weight distribution between both legs. It appears that you are leaning forward, this would fit with overweighting the front leg. Also appears you are pushing your head forward to get your nose to the string. Your bow arm shoulder is high and subsequently have to much bend in the bow arm. Some guys like a little bend but yours appears as U shape so shoulder needs to come down. Hard to tell but looks to me like you are anchoring too far forward. Would need a closer picture to see. If you anchor farther back the string would come to your face without you having to lean ahead.

That was a good picture posted in the first response, notice how the bow arm is essentially straight with the arrow. This is proper IMO and then when shooting up or downward angles maintain this posture and bend slightly at the waist to move bow up and down, don't drop or raise the bow arm. You are dropping the bow arm to aim.

Previous posters hit the nail on the head!! Your draw may be a little short and thats why you are leaning into the string. Start with a good T form and bend at the waist. Keep at it and keep us posted.

I will work on the suggestions. Awesome guys, as usual :D . My draw length was measured at 30". I have the bow set to 28.5". Do you think it would be worth going to 29" and see how it looks and feels?

Who measured it at 30" and how did they measure it? You kind of used a swing draw, try slowing down a little. The bows dl looks short for you.Try looking at your target, raise your bow slowly to the target, draw, get yourself level and balanced, and slowly execute the shot. Trigger by pushing your pin at the spot and using your back muscles to get the release to fire. Your form is really pretty good. Main thing is to relax and focus on shot execution, accuracy will follow. Draw length is critical, +or- 1/8" or so. Start by getting someone knowledgeable to determine yours and set your bow up to it. IMO dl is the most crucial element in shooting consistently.

i dont think that bow fits you. it looks short. measure your wingspan and divide by 2.5...to get in the ball park. looking at how your bow arm is so cramped and bent looking, i bet you are every bit of that 30. if you want to run short...go to a 29.5"

dont give up any bow speed...us 28" guys are always looking longingly at you long arm guys..hahah.

take a closer up pick..what does your anchor point look like?

any bow shop can measure your draw length and the change your bow to fit. if you are a 30 dl, get your bow set to 30. i am a 29 and tried to shoot a bow with a 30. it didnt take long to tell that i needed it changed. you will like your bow a whole lot more when you do.

My wing span divided by 2.5 is 29.8. I will head to the bow shop this week and see how they measure it. Then they can change it to match and move my peep. I will keep yall updated with more pics and close ups. Thanks again yall are great.

I agree that your draw length needs to be correct before you can have great form. I agree with mez about your bow arm. I'd try to get that left shoulder down and push the arm straight (but not quite locked) out in front of you. You'll need longer draw length to achieve this comfortably.

Anchor, peep location and your posture will likely all change after correcting draw length so I'd start there.

I haven't seen myself shoot on camera in a while. You've inspired me to film myself to see where I'm at these days.

I just looked at the video again and noticed what some others did and that is almost all of your weight is on your front foot. If you settle in to a solid stance distributing your weight equally on your legs it will help even out your form.

Better, but draw length may be a little too long now. My reason for saying this is that, if you look at your belt buckle and follow it up to where you top shirt button would be if you had one and draw an imaginary line between the two, the line would not be vertical. It would be slanted towards your release side, indicating too much dl. Look at the pick olydog posted. You should be able to correct by having a few twists put in your string.it would be a good thing to do, a dl that is too long is much worse than one that is too short.

Hey there Ag, from the second picture it looks like you might have gotten a little string slap on your forearm. Looking solely at your hand position on the bow, if you have the bow riding more on the meaty part of your hand it will help that out. This will also help to keep you from torquing the bow. You will only be able to have that relaxed grip at that point. To be accurate once you get the draw weight correct is simple. Grip, relaxed and same every time. Bow arm & shoulder, relaxed and same position every shot. Draw smooth and steady. Anchor, whether it is 1,2 or3 points same anchor point(a) every time. On the trigger steady pull through with some back tension, do not punch the trigger. Consistency is the key. Do everything the same way every single time and accuracy will follow. Then again I shoot trad bows, that is the name of the game on trad bows. By the way I went to a couple or Rod Jenkins clinics. He has won several world championships in traditional archery and one with a wheelie bow. He said the only difference between the tow is....... NOTHING. Do it the same every time.

I though it was too long also. So off to the barn to check and after some research I found it was set at 30.5" NOT 30. I should have checked before I left the bow shop. I will fix it tonite and take some more pics.
Yes G Posit I am an aggie. in fact so is my son and my daughter signed to play volleyball for them. The rash on my arm is from poison ivy...another story.. Thank you for your advise on my grip and relaxing. Again you guys are great
