Printed Google Earth images

You may have already done this, but thought I would pass it along. I printed images of my hunting area from GE. Turned and tilted it so I could see contours and get the best angle and hit print. I will take these along on my hunts and I have marked points of interest on them. I find myself studying these quite a bit. Easier for me to read than maps.

Yes, I've printed a couple of areas off google earth similar to what you've done but the copies were on regular 8"X11" paper & were just too small for my liking. Too, when in the area I felt the images printed were not the same as the terrain I encountered. I like topo maps a little better so stay with them now, no more copies for me! (grin)

I use both together, then take GPS and handwritten notes while scouting. Can't have too much data.

I do the same as elkduds, take in screen shots of the specific areas I'm looking to scout then take a bunch of hand written notes and pictures while I'm in there. When I come back home I type in the hand written notes and upload the pictures into my computer specifically with the waypoints that I upload from my gps into google earth. That way when I'm on google earth, I can click on the way point, view pics taken and look back over my notes. When I'm looking for tree stand spots, I will make notes specifically as to the type of equipment I'm going to need to get a stand set up. When I am looking at multiple spots the notes for the specific areas really helps me throughout the summer.

I like to carry both.. I like the Google earth print outs from a distance to go with topo's. I play with the scale and 3d features until I feel the terrain looks closer to like what it does in person.

When I print mine I only get the image on half of the 8x11 sheet. Is there a way to get it on the whole page?

Toby- When you are in google earth and hit print, select "preferences' on the print menu that pops up. Then in printer preferences select "landscape" as opposed to portrait (which is probably the default setting), and it should print out full page on a 8x11 piece of paper.

A bit off topic, but have you guys tried the USGS geo-pdf quads? You can print just the aerial of the quad, or you can add layers like stream names, trails, contour lines, etc. They print out quite nicely if I remember, too.

How do you find and print quads from the site?

- Click on the link
- Within the little map on the screen, zoom to the desired area
- To the right of the map, you'll see 'Mark Points:', select it
- click on the desired quad on the map
- Now you'll see a little placemarker, click on the that placemarker
- you'll now see a variety of different maps available. The maps that are dated 2011 and newer, are multi-layer geo-pdfs (the older ones are just regular topo). Click the + next to the map you want. Now it will be in your basket.
- Now you can click 'download all cart items'

If you download the multi-layer geo-pdf map, once you open it you should automatically open the sidebar which contains all layers. You can turn those layers on or off (the image layer is the aerial view).
