GPS maps for Garmin 62st

Postby RichM » 04 23, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I have a Garmin 62st with the 100k topographical maps pre-loaded but am considering something with more detail and have questions;
Is the Garmin Southwest 24k topo maps worth it for an MSRP of $130?
Is there a cheaper alternative for the GPS 62?
Is there a more detailed alternative for the GPS 62?

Rich, have you looked into Trax Maps http://www.koutdoorproducts.com/ -- They are a Sponsor here & have quite a few different options for GPS Mapping. My son & I both have them for our Garmins & they work awesome!

You can download free 1:24K maps for Garmin products at www.gpsfiledepot.com. I have been using them for the past 3 years on my Oregon 450 and like them.

I went with the NMTRAX+ map chip. To support a site sponsor. I'm impressed with the detail so far.

Rich, you'll like your new unit, we are very happy with our Trax map SD Card! I'm amazed at what you can see with it!

basecamp doesn't read a compiled .img file. You "install" the map tiles and other related files to basecamp, then use basecamp to compile the images you select into a single .img file that the gps can read.

Thanks for your help. I just needed to update my base camp to get it to work. I have a rino 130 and it doesn't take sd cards or I'd a chip from that site elknut posted. They look really cool but looks like you would want a color display to get all the benefits from it.
