I do not know if this is posted at the right place.

When I went hunting I wanted to get a video showing how my decoy worked. I had a Contour camera mounted on my bow. I was very disappointed in the results. The Go- Pro and other action cameras are only good out to a few yards.

I came home and started shopping for a camera that would take good video that you could see what was going on out to hundred yards. I bought a Panasonic HX-W03. The reason I bought this is because it is waterproof and reasonably priced. I payed $189.00 on Amazon. Free shipping. It also continues to record after you shut the display.

I tried mounting it on my hat but it is too hard to get it aimed where you wanted. I ended up mounting it on my bow. I plan on painting the mounting hardware black. It seems to be quite stable.

Pretty cool. I hope it works out for you.

You may want to do some research on how it handles the recoil energy / vibration from a fired bow. You may need to adjust the mounting set up. I say this because of experiences related to me by fellow spear fisherman who have mounted cams to their spear guns. In some cases the cameras could not handle the recoil from the firing of the guns.

It weighs 11.8 oz. It is also supposed to shock resistant. I might have to put a couple of rubber washers between the mounting bolts.

Pretty compact little camera. Now if you could only design a way to put an elk head decoy on the other side of the bow, you'd be in business

What kind of trouble did you have with the hat mount? I'm assuming it pointed correctly (straight) when looking straight ahead turned to the left side when you drew your bow... yes?

That's correct, when I drew my bow it was pointing to the right.

Phantom16 just sent me a pm and in it mentioned it was illegal to mount a video camera on your bow. Does anyone know what the law in Colorado is?

Don't know about Colorado. If it has a light on it, probably not legal in Wyoming either.

Just took a look at the CO regs and yep, they read similar to WA, ID, MT and say:

"f. Scopes, electronic or battery-powered devices cannot be incorporated into or attached to bow or arrow".

I do not agree with the rule but it is a rule. A mini camera certainly does not provide any advantage to a bow hunter.

I've been toying with different camera attachments for a while. I'm in idaho so bow attachment is out. All the action cams are great if you only want footage that is under 10 yards, which is great if your elk behave accordingly. The solvid hat looks like it might work for you. solvidsystems.com/‎
I'm going to try the clip shot on my back pack shoulder strap. Downside is breathing motion on the shoulder, upside is I should be able to zoom and keep an eye on the viewer to adjust if needed. Will let you know how it goes.

I picked up the camstrap system this spring at a Sportsmans show and am looking forward to putting to use. Going to give it some practice on 3d targets in the next couple of months. Looks like a good setup.

Ya I was going to get one before I saw the clip shot. Upside for the solvid hat is that it will have the least movement being on your head. I wish that you could still have a way to watch the viewer. I'm doing the same and am hoping to try the clip shot out at a shoot in the near future.

Does anyone know if it's illegal to have a camera on your bow in NM. I just watched truth 17 and they were using them in NM but doesn't mean anything. Well I hope it's not or I'll have to take my gopro off my bow.

page 34 says

"Sights on bows may not magnify targets or project light."

So the camera might be construed as a site depending on how it's mounted. This also kills the idea for me about getting a clarifyer in my peep to compensate for my diminishing eyesight.

page 131, Glossary of Terms says:

"Archery: Includes compound, recurve and longbows. Sights on bows may not magnify targets or
project light. Arrows must have broadheads (fixed or mechanical) with steel cutting edges. No
drugs may be used on arrows. Arrows cannot be driven by explosives."

Best I could do. It comes down to the specific ranger's interpretation if you put a "Go-Pro" on your bow.
