High or Low.

Think back on your misses (bow) for elk. Were they mostly high or low? I betcha I can guess

Low, but haven't had much problem since upping my summer 3D shoots, and purchasing a range finder.

75% high 25% low. I really hate missing. but missing low is the worst for me it looks like a perfect shot but slide in low.

High. Continue to practice range estimation without the range finder. Every encounter I had, once we get setup and I get my yardage markers verified with the range finder, we have had to move and the actual shot opportunity has occurred without a chance to verify range.

Where I misjudged the distance, both misses I made were low. The animal was farther than I estimated. I also missed on two other elk due to hitting a branch, and again both arrows hit low.

High. I'm the worst at judging distance. I wish there was more 3d shoots around my house.

All were low on elk over about 18 yrs (4 total that I can remember)

I would think that most misses would be low if guessing yardage on elk just because elk are big and appear closer than they actually are. So far I've had 1 low and 1 high. Both arrows deflected off something and the path was altered.

Maybe you all should try a life size target . I sell a life size cover that gives you a feel for distance.

High for me on a cow three years ago, the sad part it wasn't because I didn't know the distance, but because of my nerves! I have killed three more elk since I missed at this cow and I finally feel like I have the nerves under control.

The first bull I shot, I had at less than 10 yards, broadside, I didn't get to release an arrow though...I was shaking so bad my arrow fell off the string! Luckily by dad was able to call him back for a second time where I made the shot count at 18 yards.

I laugh at this one only because it happened to me on my first elk hunt with a bow. When I got home after that hunt I switched to a biscuit cause the arrow isn't going to fall off my rest again!!!!!

I had ranged each of the spots where the bull stood, then moved ahead just over 30 yards and didn't change pins

Well, I misjudged this (pun intended)... I figured most everyone would say they had missed low. I can see the two bulls I missed low jumping out of their socks as if they had actually been hit when the BH buried in the ground under their chest. I've never sailed one over an elk's back (not yet anyway).

The only elk I ever had the opportunity to draw on in five years, I shot last year. So no misses. I've missed on PLENTY of deer though. One I used the wrong pin and shot high, one low, and most I pulled left.
