New Items in the Elk Tool Kit?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 04 08, 2014 •  [Post 1]

What have you added in 2014 already, and, what else do you plan on adding this year? I've grabbed a few items (more than I thought after I wrote these down):

1. Elk Mountain Gear Slip Systems with camo cover for blind setups, and, I heard today my butt is in the mail (cow butt slip cover, that is). Thanks Jeff.
2. First ever tree stand. Went with Slim9300's recommendation and got a Lone Wolf hang on with climbing sticks. Now, I just gotta get him out to the house to show me how the dang thing works.
3. Wyoming Saw (thanks to Elknut1).
4. Extreme Beam headlamp. I think for 30 bones, they're a solid deal.
5. New filter cartridge for my Katadyn Base Camp water filter. The cartridge died on an Idaho mountain last year. Contacted Katadyn and they sent me a new one; said they had some manufacturing problems with some of them.
6. Two compact IR WGI Game Cams I got on a great sale at Del's Farm Supply.

Wow, I better slow down so I can afford my tags :? What have you cats picked up, or, are planning on getting to throw in your elk tool kit?

New sleeping bag on order. Marmot col membrane. Froze my butt off sleeping above timberline last fall. Cashed in REI points to get a good deal.

Considering a spotting scope and a tripod. Not really sure if it would be worth the expense. Last season, our first, most of the elk we hunted we heard bugle. Do you backpacking hunters take a spotting scope in?

My son is looking at a new pack or pack system. He is going to buy a frame with suspension. Then strap a dry bag and a day pack to it for the hike in and use the day pack for hunting. Has anybody here done this and if so how did it work out? Thanks in advance. Ron

rory, you are starting to sound like me two years ago when I first got ready for my first diy hunt! not really, I wished my list was that small back then..... this year will be easy peasy, although I did get a new string for the bow. money well spent.

These topics are always deadly for me. I think I am all set until I start reading this and find new things I didn't even think about.

My current wish list is some ASAT camo, a Garmin Rino 550, and some new arrows.

First off I want to be part of this tree stand clinic as well, have a couple of tree stands but virtually no experience using them, but some great (at least in my opinion) places to put them just lots of questions….
Anyway new for this year, I guess I have to say I been at this along time so really have plenty of gear (and really haven’t found that new gear is correlated with increased success….but new gear is fun..) just need more time…
Anyway new for this year
another dozen arrows
maybe some first lite pants
maybe a smaller day pack…something around 2200 ci

I'm liking the stone glacier over my DT2, I think. I hate loose straps everywhere. Hate them.

The loose straps don't bother me. The lack of a functional load compression system is disappointing.
