What do you feel would be a minimum poundage for a recurve/elk match. I have either a 50 or 60 lbs (at 28") takedown was thinking about packing in this year, but I shoot the lighter bow better at this time. Also the lighter bow is a little shorter so a little handier in the woods. Thoughts?

I shot stick bows for a while, even last years elk hunt, love to shoot them so much fun. Back to my compound this year. I struggled to pull much over 47-48, that is what I hunted with last year. You will find those that will say you can use less, and under ideal conditions you could. But, I would go with as much weight as you can accurately shoot. The lighter the draw weight, the heavier the arrow should be. Draw length is a key factor. If you have a long draw length, it makes up for a lot, and you can shoot less weight.

Fred Eichler shoots a 54# recurve for most of his North American big game. A well tuned arrow and shot accurately will do a lot. I have heard this many times, when you shot a critter in the guts the weight you pull really does not matter. You need to be confident in your shot. I hunt with a 70# recurve most of the time. My buddy elk hunts with me with his 54# bow. A well placed shot is what really matters. If you can hit what you are looking at with the 50# now and arrows are tuned right you will have no problems.

Glenn is spot on! It's all about shot placement and a good cut on contact broadhead. If you shoot the lighter better use it!

What kind of bow.

The 50 is a Cascade custom job and the 60 is a Martin Hatfield

Both good bows, you should be fine with either, shoot the one that is most accurate for you.

The 50 will kill an elk for sure. Just know your range limitations.
