bald knobs

silly question here. We found a bald knob that was 6-8 hundred yard long. On both side it drop off and it's all woods. It does create a funnel on both side. Do elk for the most part like staying in the woods? or don't care and walk right over the top? I know whitetails would rather go around than walk in the wide open. The only reason I'm asking we had multiple bulls in the valley around the bald knob.

How wide? My guess is they will cross it at night maybe even feeding there. What's growing in it? For the most part though I'd say you're right... they'll skirt around it.

I agree with Indian Summer. Elk may come out in the open, but they sure know how to use cover to survive.

Most elk will prefer to not cross an open knob of that size unless forced. Elk like to use contours and cover unless pushed. However, it sounds like you may have found some decent spots for ambushing the elk that are in the valleys. If you can get in the timber and find the best trail that parallels the knob and lies between the tree line and half way down the hill it could make a nice ambush spot at any time of the day as elk would rather skirt the bald opening than cross it. In the valleys that cut up into the knob find a parallel running trail meeting a trail that follows the valley roughly at at the V in the valley if in timber or where there is a steep change in elevation and set up a tree stand or make a ground blind. If any of the valleys lead to water even better. Maybe PM or email Swede a map of the spot and I bet he could pick out some likely ambush spots for you. Feel free to PM me and I would be happy to give it a go as well. I only bring up ambush spots because you are familar with whitetail hunting. If you like to run and gun you can do it during the morning and try some ambush spots for an evening hunt.

i was on a ridge glassing one afternoon. i saw a herd of elk on a bald knob. i watched them for some time until i asked myself what the hell am i still sitting here for. the elk stayed there for awhile and i made my way to the top of the ridge and met them in the timber line. needless to say i didn't get an elk that day but, it was around 1:30 in the afternoon. i watched them elk for roughly 15-20min. on that knob feeding. they didn't seem to have a care in the world. now was that a rare event i don't know. but from what i saw they didn't seem to mind being in the open for a good period of time.
