Playbook "Plays!"

Not sure if anyone or any group has done this, but my hunting buddies and I are going to take what Paul wonderfully wrote in the play book and draw it out in visual aids.
Such as the X's and O's on a football field per say. The way Payton Manning reads those black and white print outs, when the defense is on the field.

We plan to add in all the notes to why we are moving in what direction, what we are going to do if the wind changes, where the shooter or caller is going to be and then list the call sounds that Paul recommends to use in each situation.

After doing this we are going to actually play these strategies out by preforming the calls our selves and run the "plays" to the best of our abilities here in the back yard. ( I know this sounds a bit silly, but we are going to do whatever it takes to put bulls on the ground this fall) We don't want the words unprepared to be in our vocabulary this fall!

This fall it will be mandatory for each member of our group to have the playbook memorized! I drive truck so I kind of have all the time in the world to listen to the audio version. My buddy and I got our playbook a week ago and I've already went through it twice, and the elk sounds about 10 times.

There is no reason for us not to be proficient callers by this fall.

The only thing I wish Paul would of done on the audio cd that would of been different is actually making the audible calls while he is describing the different scenarios. ( I understand that it would a big undertaking to do this though.) Not sure if his dvd's do this or not?

I would not hesitate if you have not purchased the playbook, or the playbook/audio cd combo. Most of us are spending a few thousand bucks on our hunts this fall. This would hands down be the best thing you can do to prep for this season!!!

My one buddy is actually taking the playbook and cd on his honeymoon next week to Hawaii.... His wife to be has no clue he is taking it... she's gonna be

when you finish all your scenario sketches send them this way it will save me the trouble.

tell your friend there are better things to do on a honeymoon in Hawaii for two weeks. he has the rest of spring and summer to fine tune elk calls.

I have an idea Kev. If you guys are that intent on "running the plays" you should take a drive over here and get up to the Benezette area and run them where there are actually elk. No it won't be the rut but elk obviously talk year round so surely you'll learn a few things. Also the guys in your group who have never seen an elk can de-sensitize themselves a bit. Have their first encounters before actually hunting could make a big difference. It's not hard to find elk up there. There are some big hills too so set camp, wear your packs while hiking etc. REALLY run your plays including camp and the whole "9 yards". Good luck!

Kevin, great idea about drawing up "plays" beforehand so you guys can visualize position & each ones role as you swap shooters & callers around. Team hunting/calling is a very effective way to call in all types of elk, playing the wind & keeping movement down is crucial on such setups, make sure to stay around 30 minutes per setup no matter if you feel elk are in the area or not. When you get a play drawn up please take a photo of it & show it here on the forum as we'd all love to see how you're doing it, again, great idea!

If I understand you correctly about making the various sounds elk make with a mouth reed & bugle then explaining each sound & methods of use, then yes I've already done that in the Vol- 1, 2 , 3, 4, or what's considered the 4-Pack of DVD's.
