Another Newbie

Hey all, another newbie flatlander here. I'm new to the site not elk hunting though; been out to Colorado for elk half a dozen times, with some success. I'm always looking to glean any new information that I can and maybe even offer up some of my own.
I call my place in the woods about 50 miles north of the Twin Cities in MN home.
I strictly bowhunt, and have been that way for the last 17 years. Nothing against guns, just don't own any, I stand by 2A.
I've also got the same problem that I see a few other have on this and other boards: my hunting partners have either gotten too old, or been there don't want to again, or it's too expensive, etc.. So I may be doing my first solo backpack trip this year. I'm no stranger to wilderness camping and hunting, just haven't done a solo yet so it should be interesting. I'm also not against meeting new people to hunt either so look me up if your close by and are looking.

David, welcome sir, glad to have you aboard! Thanks for letting us know how you feel & stand about weapon choice! I too am mainly a bowhunter but will grab the ole shooting iron occasionally on Mule Deer hunts. Maybe you can meet up with someone here to share a camp with? Heck you just never know, I myself have shared one with several hunters on this Forum, good luck bud!

My hunting friends are also getting too old to hunt anymore. I have been hunting deer in Ohio solo for the last couple of years. I'm trying to get drawn for an elk permit in Kentucky. They have a large herd now but the odds of getting drawn for a non-resident is low. If I get drawn, I will have to hunt solo. I have done some research on how to cut up and pack out the meat. They have some good videos on the internet that may be useful. Good luck on your next hunt.

I don't have much experience elk hunting, so i cant post on a lot of technical stuff. what I do post on is stuff that I have encountered or felt as a newb that other new elk hunters can relate to and understand.

I'm nearly 70 years old but still hunting deer and turkey in Ohio. I keep track of the elk in Kentucky. Getting a permit to hunt them is not easy. I sure wish they would swim across the river into Ohio. The herd seems to continue to grow even with Kentucky sending animals to other states. So does anyone know why they reduced the number of elk permits for 2015-16?
