Deer sightings on elk hunts

Postby Steve G » 03 24, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I have spent most of the day reading posts here and I didn't see this come up so I am curiouse to know; for those of you hunting public land for elk, do you often see mule deer in your elk habitat or do they not really share the same habitat? If you do, how do the two species react to one another? I see from some posts that the elk seem to be put off by the presence of cattle and sheep is it the same with deer?

I saw elk and mule deer daily on my hunt last year. that's why I'm going to buy a deer license this year. that way I won't see a single one

Not unusual to see elk and deer in close proximity. A couple years ago I had fun with a mulie doe in southern CO. I decided to throw out a few calls with my Sceery Ace 1 call and I started hearing a blowing sound. It was loud and getting closer when suddenly a doe appeared and circled me looking for whatever just made those calf sounds. She literally walked up close enough I could have reached out and touched her. She got spooked and took off. I called again and she came right back to me. It was cheap entertainment at its best in the wild watching her look for me. She kept hanging around so finally I stood up and spooked her off. It was the first time I'd heard a deer blowing like that. But not the last time I've heard that. I watched a cow elk make the same type of blowing sound the next day but louder less than a half mile away.

Hopefully the Wyo mule deer herds continue to rebound. Saw quite a few does still with their fawns during September in 2012. Let them all walk even though had several opportunities. Last year on public ground saw a couple of nice bucks in our area, but no shot. Went for a cow elk hunt on private ground in the Cheyenne area and saw no elk but 40-50 muley does and multiple shooter bucks. Too bad I couldn't pull the trigger on one...

I've seen my biggest whitetail elk hunting. He saw me first so I just sat down and pulled out my old video camera and even with an old high eight and about 500 yards away you can tell he's a good one. I've found three of my best deer sheds in the same drainage, it's just tough to get to in November once the snow flies but I need to really spend more time during the whitetail rut in there.
