white garbage bag

I have heard that white garbage work just fine for haling out quarters. Is that true? Or do most people have game bags? Does anybody else have other ideas?


I seen the "For the Economy Minded " Post and thought this might be a cheap way but don't know.

I helped a guy pack out his elk and be used clear bags, but we have had conversations with Dow and they said never to use plastic that is doesn't cool the meat properly. We use game bags and cover with a thick layer of chilli powder to keep bees and bears away.

I agree on the cooling aspect when using plastic bags. game bags let the meat breath and cool.

Game bags have to breathe in order to cool the meat. Head to Goodwill and get the 4 biggest cotton pillow cases you can find.

There is nothing wrong with hauling quarters in a white garbage bag. Keeps your pack clean.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as you don't plan on storing them in there. If you are just using them to haul in, no problem as long as its not more than a couple hours at most. But you won't get quite as much cooling while they are in there. So as long as you are mindful of temps and don't lollygag, I don't think it would be a problem.

Again, hauling is probably fine, but don't plan on keeping them in there.

My friend is a Fish Monger. He once gave me big food safe plastic bags. I used them to brine turkey. I need to hit him up again. All my white plastic bags smell heavily of plastic. Makes me paranoid. (Just me)

I always carry 5 game bags with me. They're light weight and when rolled up don't take up much room at the bottom of my day pack. Once it's down, quarter the elk, put them in game bags, in the shade to get it cooling ASAP and then head back to camp to retrieve my frame pack for hauling. If it's in the afternoon with the sun out, I don't want to put elk quarters in plastic for any amount of time. Paul has the reusable Allen game bags on his site for $17. After the season, take them to the local laundry mat and wash them for next years hunt.

We put the meat in game bags and then in plastic bags to put in the packs. Comes out of the plastic as soon as it is out of the pack.

If using plastic make sure they are just plain garbage bags or contractor bags that are unscented and uncoated with anything.
