Western CO Elk

hey guys,

I am planning a DIY elk hunt with a friend (lives in CO for 3 years) and our dads for the 1st rifle season. Terrian will be in issue for our fathers so we have been looking mostly at western CO. my friend did mention checking out the Flat Tops wilderness area, but I have heard mixed reviews of this area. He also mentioned checking out unit 70. I called the CO hunt planners today and he suggested Western CO if terrain is going to be an issue. He mentioned Unit 3 and said only 1100 people appiled for 12oo tags last year in this unit. This to me seems like our chances of being drawn are good and we wont be in a sea of orange while hunting.

does anyone have an information about these areas (3,70, flat tops)? Or could anyone suggest any other units that do not require preference points? This will most likely be the only chance My dad has to go on an elk hunt seeing that he will turn 64 in September.

Check on the amount of public land in GMU 3. There is alot of private there. Also check the size of the residence heard there. Alot of the elk migrate from the high country into 3 in the later seasons. The flat tops can be some rough country so look at your tops to see if this is an area you want to hunt. You might look at the Grand Mesa or the Uncompahgre (GMU 62) as well.

I was in Co. unit 62 first two weeks of archery season last year.

Lots of hunters (looked like OKC) & atv.

Elk was either gone to private or unit 61 after the first three days.

The Elk in 62 will stay there all season you just have to know where they go. I located Elk even on the last day on the public land.

Baddaddy, Do you have any areas in 62 that you would recommend checking out for the 1st rifle season? I don't want to step on toes, but any tips would be great. If we get drawn I'm planning on heading out to do a scouting trip for a long weekend in late July, early August. Also does anyone know of any places to get a horse for the old man if we do end up in rough country?
