Aerial Imagery

Many of us use aerial imagery to do 'virtual scouting'
Aerial views have become much more clearer recently
Some of my favorites are:
FlashEarth and BingMaps

Here is a pic of a waterhole I found in 61. With some scrutiny, I noticed the pine tree had some branches missing.
I thought... 'Hmmm... I bet there was a tree stand in that tree at one time...'

So once I scouted the water hole it indeed was for a tree stand!
I will also be placing a tree stand here

What I have noticed with different satelite imagery, is that you are best to check out several. I too like Flash earth and use others. Where I hunt, Google Earth is the most up to date, but the photos were taken in the late afternoon, so the shadows are long. That is a problem when you try to closely examine some place.

Thank you for posting this! I wasn't aware of those new programs. Google Earth can be very spotty in some regions, it'll be nice to try these out!

Has anyone ever found a herd of elk on satellite imagery? I'm always looking, but haven't found a critter yet!

I can show you my pickup out in the forest and my travel trailer in camp on GE. No elk though. I too have looked.

I've always used Google Earth and never heard of Flash Earth so I looked it up. I think I'm switching because FE has more updated aerials of my hunting spots!

I would also suggest trying BingMaps in the "Bird's Eye View'
Bird's Eye isnt available in some aerial imagery, but where it is... WOW!!!

Flash Earth is also pretty cool as you can set the GPS coordinate cursor [LAT/LONG] to the same as your GPS entry.

Also...
For those that have the ability to be 'techy' with your gps and computer, there is another nice free feature I came across.

Its called GPSBabel

GPSBabel lets you move data between popular GPS systems such as those from Garmin, DeLORME, Magellan or a large number of map programs.

Here is how it works...

Transferring waypoint data from Google Earth to your GPS

Create a new folder on your desktop & name it accordingly

Select a waypoint you created in GE – right click on the waypoint and
select ‘Save Place as’ – (You can either rename it or leave it the same)

Select ‘save as type’ drop down and be sure to select ‘KML’

Save in new created folder on your desktop!

Now…

Go to www.GPSbable.com

(Plug in your GPS to your computer USB and turn it on)

Under ‘Input’ select File
Format – Google Earth (Keyhole) Markup Language – (KML)

Select ‘File Name(s) and find your folder with your GPS waypoints as KLM

Select the waypoints you want to transfer into your GPS.

Under ‘Output’
Select ‘Device’
Click Format and find your device (GPS)

Click ‘Apply’!

All done!
Your waypoint(s) from your virtual scouting are now in your GPS!!!

Have you found any way to put aerial imagery on your GPS? I know you can buy the yearly Birdseye subscription, and I have done it for a few years... just wondering if there's a way to do this for free... seems all the info is available already. The Birdseye software is great, but the yearly subscription stinks!

Not that I know of...
I like to use GE, FlashEarth, Bing Maps all together - toggle back and forth as each one has its own pros/cons

One thing people often miss is the ability to select the photo time set in Google Earth. Often, it does NOT use the most detailed photography by default.

That being said, Bing Maps is amazing in my area. Probably 4 times better resolution.

Yes, hack the bios of the garmin then convert your tiled kmz files to a single .jnx and place it in the birdseye folder on the gps or sd card. This is sat imagery set to become visible under huntinggps map when zoomed to 800 ft. Not as easy as it sounds.
