Post Up Your Elk Sounds 2014 - Part 4, Double Duty

Something a bit different for this one. Time to exercise those calls a bit It's important to be able to be able to switch your calling up (cow to bull, bull to cow, one bull sound to another) as the situation dictates. Let's do alternating locators and screams in this episode. We know what locators are, and, that they are in Elknut's top 4 elk noises a hunter should have in their tool kit. Screams are a different elk sound but also have their place in a hunters arsenal. They are used by bulls to gather or call to their cows, which could be for a variety of reasons. Screams are pretty short, high pitched, and sometimes very URGENT sounding. Screams are a great tool when deploying one of the threat levels while in tight to bullwinkle.

I normally don't post up first but will on this one to get it rolling. Below is a practice session I did last year with both locators and screams. Let's do a locator, switch to scream, back to a locator, etc....

Nice! Sounding great. I found the screams to be quite fun to do while practicing. I chucked my diaphragm after last season, because it got all jacked up. Went to Cabela's the other day and they had zero. I guess I could've grabbed a turkey diaphragm, but I've found these more difficult to get sounds out of. I'll post soon as I can dig one up! Got the soundcloud app downloaded too . . .

Thanks Shawn (I mean Bull Dozer ..). Always a work in progress. Those sounds were recorded last year. What I find is that my calling proficiency is a perishable skill, especially if I don't practice all the time. You may consider ordering a few of the Glacier Country Calls from Troy in MT. His link is on top. I've tried a few of them and they're really a good product.

Brent, concentrate on the 2nd bugle! hold it 1/2 to 1 second longer IMO. That is money right there! The beginning of that bugle is how you want to start almost all of your bugles. That will put bulls in your lap! Go to cow calf thread I explain more...

Been trying to dial in on my pointers I have received. I am ready to move on and plan on updating my sounds here in the near future. Just have to say thank you Troy and others for helping with this. For anyone else, post up your sounds! just hearing yourself on a recording device can make a difference. With practice and pointers from great callers can help in the long run as well. Just give it a try.

Brent is right. Throw your sounds up. My sounds in this thread made me realize I'm really not happy with my screams. Hearing them here is quite a bit more motivation than alone in the back room. Makes you more accountable.

ctdad,I listened to your location bugle and the challenge bugle, on the double Duty and the location bugle thread. You bugles are coming right along. If you want more out of your location bugle put more of a tone change into the goose call at the beginning, and use ( Less)almost no voice. This will give you a better break into the mid tone and and you will see more of a difference between both bugles. It will also make it louder with less hiss?? Also you are at a point where you can fine tune your tongue placement to hit the sweet spot , with your tongue on the latex,so you get very little hiss. I hope you know what I mean??
Both, you and Brent, are very close to hitting that next level with your calling. You both will call in plenty of elk with the sounds you are making now... The next levels will give you the skill to bring in elk others will at least struggle to call in with less realistic sounds. IMO Realistic sounds DO make a Big difference.

Look at this guys. I got great advice from a world champion elk caller for free with no judging or making me feel like the rookie I am. Throw up your sounds. These guys can help you learn faster and better than going at it alone.

Yikes Wyatt. I wonder who your teacher is Just teasing, I know who it is. Your pop is one of the best callers I know. Your locators are on the mark for sure and will work in any state on any elk. For the screams, I'd shorten them up just a smidge. Remember, screams are attention calls by bulls, "hey girls, let's go now" or "hey girls, you're getting a bit too far away from me, come back in now". They are demanding, urgent, directive calls. You wont be getting any constructive criticism from me. Although you might be getting questions on how to sound that good!

I am ready to post some more sounds and I see RJ has started another thread (bugles/chuckles). More cow/calf sounds, locator/screams for feedback (and to see if there is any improvement) before I move on.

Troy, I am looking at ordering some more calls here and haven't noticed the SW2 on your site yet. Just curious on when people can place an order on that call. Thanks.

Brent I like a lot of what you are doing I really liked your screams. One thing to try is starting off with a lighter goose sound light tongue and light air pressure this will start you in a mid tone once that reed breaks just follow it right on up more air and a little more tongue pressure just makes it a little more deliberate. You are very close to taking it to a higher level of calling. I'm very impressed.

Guy's Brent here has really only started using elk reeds and practicing this last year! Correct me if I mis stated Brent. Everyone can become proficient in making real quality sounds in a short time with practice, help "input" the right reeds and tubes.

JJ, on your location start more like a goose sound that I was talking about for Brent. What I hear is you are starting the call out with a lot of pressure going strait into the high note. Try starting with a mid tone and then take it on up it will give you versatility and depth to your sounds. The screams are starting the same with a a lot of pressure as well start that off just like the locator drop the voice out right in the beginning then bring it in. I know you can do it, I don't think you hit a wall although it feels like it. I have been there myself I just needed someone from the outside to give me a different perspective. Keep it up you are doing a great job.

Thanks for the feed back. Went back and listened to others and how to start. I will give it a try and see what I can come up with. Need to step up and practice my chuckles/bugles as well. Craig is right, last February is when I started my calling for the most part (with the diaphragm that is) and before that it was the mighty terminator bugle......not saying there is anything wrong with that.
