Colorado Unit 76 help

I have a group of guys coming from louisiana, and we will have a combination of bull/cow and deer tags. We were waiting for unit 61, but it looks like that won't ever happen, so now we are looking for alternatives. I would like some info on the following:
1)places to camp...campgrounds, cabins, etc
2)are there easier areas to hunt- we have a few older guys that are not really trophy hunters, but may want a shot at a bull, but cannot climb, and I heard this area is tough, but are there areas wheree "less fit" folks can access?
3)We have hunted in 751,75,521, and 61/62 in the past, and have the means to get animals out, but we don't have horeses, so will we be able to get our game out without renting horses?
4)we might consider "hiring" a guide to show us around, and give us some guidence in the area as well.
We are not "trophy" hunters, but a few of us have waited 10-12yrs to make a 61 trip, so there are a couple of us that will want to go after a decent bull, and a few are coming just fot the expierence, and to bring home some elk steaks, but we don't want to go up there "completely" blind, so ANYTHING you can give us will help....thanks

When are you planning on hunting? I can only talk for archery season. First of all it is big country. Six miles down there feels like the biggest six miles I've ever walked. But it's beautiful and there are a lot of elk. I haven't been for a few years and have heard that there were fires that went through a lot of the spots I hunted. If you are there during the archery season you are going to see boatloads of animals above treeline, but that doesn't mean it's the only spot to find elk. I know of guys who shot elk right out of the campground. There are areas where you can drive right to hunting and others where it's a little bit more of a walk.

I've never hunted 76 (and probably never will, because it takes so many PP's), but i've looked at it hard on a map.

I'd get hold of a National Geographic topo map (assuming one exists) and look the whole unit over. Trails Unlimited is another good alternative, if I remember the name right. There's another group, I think called "Rocky Mountain Maps" that are decent too, but the ones I have for other units are in metric. My brain doesnt do well switching back and forth between meters and feet above sea level.

there are a decent # of mountain roads up there. should be room for a good camp. there are a bunch of campgrounds in Southfork as well if you'd like a camping alternative with power and water.

thanks...we are looking at going in with some bull and cow tags...no deer tags, so this will be just an elk hunt.....I'm just worried about access into the hunting areas. looking at it on google earth, there seems to be some pretty decent areas that we could access within reason

I would suggest talking with the units game warden. both the ones I have talked to in Colorado and Idaho have been very helpful in identifying roads , trails and such.

for $12, I think youll like this map. its a good scale topo, shaded for tree cover, and its weather resistant.
