Winter Workouts!

Postby ElkNut1 » 01 10, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I know for myself I generally lighten my workouts come Nov thru May. I still enjoy a routine through those months but I do not hit is as hard trying to let the body take a slight break! Cardio, wts, & pack carrying are still on but the workouts are not as intense for me until 1st of June. I do know as I get older I find getting rid of any excess wt. does not come as easy as when I was in my 30's & 40"s so maintain a manageable wt. at all times makes it a much easier transition to tone up as needed.

Do you folks do something similar or do you keep up the pace & not let off year around? Or do you need to start a program to fit your lifestyle?

I keep it up year around, but it's not quite as intense. I workout on the stairs, ride a stationary bike, hike the mountains in snowshoes with a backpack, and do some light upper body training.

Hiking with a pack is still the main workout.

My bodyweight stays the same all year. Which at my age is pretty light now. At my peak I was 6'1" and 240lbs. Now at 71 i'm 175lbs. I go for endurance now instead of bulk.

I try and keep up year around but not at the intensity like I do in the summer months. I do a lot of upland bird hunting (have dogs) and in between deer hunting try and walk/hunt as much as possible with the dogs. In the winter I try and snow shoe, XSki, coyote hunt(a lot of walking in deeper snow) and then comes wood cutting season on the weekends from end of Feb to mid April.

I need to keep up with push-ups and sit ups in the winter, that is my down fall. Never been much of a runner most likely do to being a big dude.

I work out all year long as well. I definitely dial up the intensity through the summer and try to peak about 2 weeks prior to leaving on the hunt.

Right now I'm doing Cross Fit every day. Have never done this before but so far I like it. I'll be in better shape come May/June than I have in the past. In the past I have concentrated more on strength through the winter with less cardio work. As I get into summer I do less strength and more carido. Cross fit combines them both. I also lion hunt this time of year so get in a good 8-10 miles in the hills most every weekend.

In the summer I'll work out twice a day. Once over the noon hour and then again when I get home at night. I'll start adding in more weighted hiking and gradually increase the weight through the summer. Will start with around 50lbs and be up to 90 by the time I'm ready to leave.

i dont have any excuses. even on my coldest and wettest days..i am a windbreaker away from a good workout.

i do four exercises..regularly
in order of hardest workout to least strenous.
1. run 2.5 miles on a trail. up and down. i have not completed the loop yet without grasping my knees, heaving for air..4-5 times.
2. run 3 miles on the paved trail. i can run it non stop..i do walk down a steep hill to save my knees
3. mountain bike 15 miles.i stop once to look for turkeys.
4. roadbike 22 miles..1st 8 miles i barely break a sweat. last five miles is all uphill back to my house. lung burner.

i am looking for a 30lb kettle bell to build up core strength.

i'll hunt january deer. which is brutal..and i do a summer 50 mile backpack trip to remind my body how sucky..i mean..how fun it is!

i wish i was a super skinny person with naturally prominant ab muscles..but know. i joke: "yea, i'm in shape. pear shaped" :D

i like to use the winter to do mostly strength training (maximal efforts) with quick/ heavy metabolic conditioning. 15 minutes of ugly. in the summer i try to encorporate a more stamina based approach (dynamic efforts), more muscle stamina as opposed to straight cardio. utilization of whatever strength i've aquired so i can express it productively. some running, but mostly under 5 k. i've never been a long distance kindda guy. end of summer i like to be more specific towards long hikes with a heavy pack, varying from 60- 135 pounds.... varying trails from around lakes to up mountains. i believe in crafting imposed demands to create a desired adaptation. i definately default to my lowest level of training.... its just ongoing to try and eek up the bar...

I did start P90x a couple weeks ago. I usually don't do a lot this time of the year, but as Elknut mentioned! as one ages shedding the weight added during the holidays gets tougher.

I think I have to modify my P90X, I need to reduce or eliminate the strength part and double up on the cardio stuff. Since I started, an old shoulder injury has flared up and my bow arm and hand are kind of numb. Same thing I had twenty years ago, I can hardly draw my bow right now. So, I am going to modify and hopefully my arm will get back to normal.

I should finish my P90X about the time the weather breaks here and then will spend a lot of time hiking with a weight pack.

Since the end of November I've been hitting the gym very regularly. I've now settled into a 5 day workout routine and have been consistently making the workouts. I lift 2 days a week, and I do 45 minutes of pretty intense cardio. I switch between 3 different machines on those 3 days so to not get bored. I always do the interval training mode on the machines which allow you to change intensities every 2 minutes. It is a really good workout for 45 minutes, but am to the point I may up it by 4 or 8 minutes.
I navigated through the holidays without gaining much weight if any, and the consistent workouts are giving me some satisfied results in losing what extra I had. For me, diet is key. I think what has helped me the most is about 6 weeks of being very careful with my food intake. At 48 years old, I can't just eat whatever I want anymore... Might as well accept it and deal with it.

I need to exercise year-round ... I want to be in shape for elk, but I do plan on being in shape for other stuff, too!

I'm doing P90x3 now ... it's not so bad. I try to do it 6 days a week. Today's the day off ... and Wife and I put 6-7 miles on cc-skis at 9000'. It's nice to go out an enjoy something like that, instead of having it beat you up.

Frankly, though, the main reason I exercise now is that I get grumpy if I don't. And I gain weight like ... well, I gain a lot of weight quickly. But it's the moods that keep me coming back. I get up in the morning, push "Play" on the DVD, and in a half-hour, I feel good -- like my engine has been warmed-up for the day!

The thing is -- I will be out there year round playing with horses, trimming their feet, lifting heavy things, cc-skiing, camping, hiking ... and if I don't work out, I'll damn-sure injure myself.

Knock on wood -- it's been years since I've had an injury time-out. I credit being in shape.

I continue to exercise. I have moved indoors and am giving the exercise equipment a workout. I hear you about the weight thing. It seems from Thanksgiving on, there are a lot of sweets around the house. It take a lot of discipline to leave them alone.

I keep a high intensity level pretty much year round. I will take a two week coast later in the spring and another late summer. I lift weights at the gym 4 days a week. They routine I use is in cycles to add strength and endurance. Right now I am doing a cycle that is 3 repeats of a 4 week cycle. Week 1 is 5 sets of 15. Week 2 is 5 sets of 10. Week 3 is 5 sets of 5. Week 4 is 5 sets of 3. Each week you increase your weight so you are at failure at the end of the set. You repeat this routine 3 times. At the end of the 12 weeks I will do a 2 week cycle of 10 sets of 10. The key to this entire routine is minimal recovery(rest) between sets. I use on the lighter weight and more rep sets the one minute rule. You have one minutes to do the set, what ever is left over is your rest break. So if you do a set of 15 and you take 30 seconds to complete then you get 30 seconds to rest before doing the next set. If you do this while wearing a heart rate monitor you will see how fast your heart rate shoots up.

For the cardio side I run 5 days a week. Normally 2-3 miles except on Saturday I try and get 6-8 miles in. Once the summer time gets here I will replace some of the runs with bleacher climbs with a pack. Since we do not have any mountains here have to use the metal mountain. I have been looking into getting a stair climber for the house. I will be looking into a pool membership for lap swimming.

If anyone would like more info on this just ask and I will send it to you.

I do a pretty intense cardio work out about five times a week and no weight
training. I will use an elevation training mask a couple of months before I
head to Wyoming, that made a huge difference on my wind in the elevation. I
didn't use it in 12 but in 2013 I did and felt like a new man heading
uphill. It's had the biggest impact in my workout ethic

Year round routine: 100 to 150 pushups, 200 to 300 bicycle crunches, 2 miles per day treadmill walk/run on alternating grades.

Usually around July I add the pack when doing the treadmill, starting at 20 and working up to 30 lbs.

I also just bought a small stationary bike thingy that sits under my computer desk for my "down time" ...just to burn a few calories 8-)

I've considered an elevation mask before but the reviews online are very mixed. However, last year and this year I'm hunting at 6000 feet and the elevation wasn't a huge factor compared to 10k I've done in the past. If I go back to the high country, I may have to try a mask

The type of workouts I've been doing this winter include a lot of anaerobic work. I'm curious to see if that translates into good elevation training as well?

If Dan tells me he is my father, I am out of here! (Star Wars reference)

I run mainly. I signed up for my 9th marathon in May, and my first 50 mile trail run in June. So my work will mainly be running endurance related, but with additional core work, and leg strength building workouts.

Yup. I live at 68 feet. And my office is one the beach. Elevation is a challenge. I just do cardio and hope for the best.

I live at 6,000' elevation but travel Monday through Thursday and I am usually somewhere that is around 500' all week. Hotels and restaurants take their toll if I don't watch what I eat and work out on the road. I'm not a runner but last year at 49 I trained for and completed my first half marathon in April. I also put together a 12 person team from work and we ran the Wild West Relay. 200 miles from Ft. Collins to Steamboat Springs. It was a blast and we're doing it again this year. I definitely need to add workouts with the pack and weight to my routine though. We also downhill ski and try and go every weekend.

I'm a weight trainer mostly. I'm going to have double hernia surgery in two weeks so hopefully I'll be able to hit the road bike by the time March-April rolls around. I really hate cardio, but weight training is pretty much no stop year round. I don't take long breaks between sets so it gets my heart rate pretty elevated. I hunted at 9,600 feet last year and live at 800' so I was actually impressed on my lung capacity and ability to get my breath back quickly. I gave myself an extra day to get acclimated to the elevation, and that I think was a great idea.

Used the Wilderness athlete supplements and it really helped as well!

Guys another thing that you need to train is your mind! I really focused my attention on the query I was after and tried not to think about the elevation. You would be amazed at what your body can do when you are mentally prepared! Every time you do a set and say you want to do 10 reps of something. do 12... or even 14. Push yourself as hard as you can when you think you can't do it1

Oh and I'm not sure how many of you guys have lifting partners, but I think a good partner is worth any scheduling conflicts that might come up. My buddy I lift with is not a mountain hunter at all but he knows how to get that extra couple of reps out of me and pushes me to failure. Safety is still key to great lifts. Make sure that your confident in your partner to know when you need a spot.

I will be doing a some leg presses. I do lunges with hand weights.

In the past, I have also done "reversors". We have a local flood dike. I throw on my weighted pack and I will walk backwards up the dike and walk down. Repeat. You don't need many and you will feel your quads burning. I start off with 5 and work my way up to 10 sets) Right now that hill is the local sledding hill so I need to wait until the snow melts some before I can tackle it without falling.

Something else which I am going to try this year. I will take my treestand harness and connect it to an old tire and take it for a drag around the neighborhood. (Picture dragging a deer)

I will also be doing wind sprints up the local parking ramp.

My biggest obstacles for trail races is I don't have much for off road trails where I live. I have to drive 45min-1 hour to get decent trails for training. I log plenty of miles per week, but I need to do exercises to increase my lateral stability/strength and quad strength, as 98% of my miles are on road/paved trails/treadmill.

Since I don't have to contend with the snow ya'll northern guys have up there I pretty much just do cardio year round (running). It served me well on my hunt last year and I didn't have any problems getting around in the mountains after a day or 2 to acclimate to the altitude. Since south Louisiana is flat there are not many options for doing hills other than maybe running stadiums at the local high school. I may try doing some walks with a loaded back pack later this year just for the heck of it.

The last few years I've slacked off quite a bit with my winter workouts. Spring is my busiest time of year at work, so in years past, my serious working out doesn't get started until summer. Always workout, but way less until summer.

This year, I signed up for a half marathon that is early May as motivation to stay after it (I've never ran that far). I also joined a crossfit gym and I'm really enjoying that as well. If your current workouts are boring (mine were to me), check out a crossfit gym. It's fun....and hard.

I've said this before. Elk hunting is the motivation for a healthier lifestyle for me. I workout, eat healthier and take better care of myself because of my desire to go the mountains and hike, camp, backpack, hunt, etc for as many years as my body can do it. I'm only mid thirties so I plan for that to be a long time.

I might skip today, but the sunshine is still looks apealling. Running isn't my first choice, but it's cheap and the best workout I can sneak in during my lunch break.

In January I start p90x then come July I switch to insanity to get cardio going but once September rolls around I pretty much just hunt! I'm getting older now (43) and it just seems the weight does come off as easy! I don't know if it's just my bad eating habits(that I've done my whole life), or it's just age. Either way being a flat lander I have to do everything I can to climb those mts for two weeks a year plus it gives me a good excuse to get in shape. My wife doesn't seem to mind

CC-skiing is a good workout. Sometimes I feel out of place at the more crowded spots ... me with my camo, and everyone else in bright Lycra.

Mix it up with some cardio and you should be good. For reasons other than elk hunting, that is primarily what I do. I've have had no issues and have actually found myself recovering faster when climbing steep grades. I hike with a heavy pack year round and I will force myself to get on the stairmill for 30 minutes twice a week as the season gets close but I freaking hate exercising indoors, especially on a machine.

Guys, many of you are have some awesome training going on, sweet! It will help flatten out those steep mtns. (grin)

I too have been at it doing my best to stay in elk shape. Humping a 60# pack around twice a week & a steady diet of cardio & mid range wt workouts 3 times a week, it takes 1 hr 30 min each workout, I know it will help out this old fart! I've also been doing 900-1000 push-ups a day 3 days a week. I hope the elk can see the difference in my training! (grin) Keep up the good work & good luck!

Paul, sounds like you've got a pretty good chance at winning the push up challenge over on the other forum!!! I was going to make a pretty good run on it, but strained my rotator cuff (again) this morning during my workout, so it's not gonna be me in the winners circle. Good luck, I'll be waiting on your video! :D

Ha Ha, not so sure on the winning part but I will give it my all, I will say that doing a 100 military style non stop is very very tough & most likely not going to happen with me. (grin) It will be fun & I really like the challenge. Bummer on your shoulder!

Ha Ha not quite but what a pump up when you're done with the first set. I've always done push-ups but nothing like lately. In the morn I do.
4 sets 50 - 200
4 sets 40 - 160
4 sets-30 - 120
6 sets 20- 120
5 sets 10- 50

I do this in 35 minutes then I do half of those sets in the evening of the same day. It's a very good full body workout, at first I didn't realize it did that much for the overall body but it sure does, of course upper body gets most of the credit.

Very impressive ... I do push-ups quite a bit ... but my arms/chest/core/quads would be a mess after that.

That's stuff for a 20 year-old ... act your age!

Don't leave out walking in the deep snow. While your dog is up on the path, hit that deep snow, great for leg strength.

as many rounds as possible for 20 minutes

10 jumping jacks
10 pushups
10 squats

upper body, legs, and cardio used in this.
remember squats weight on heels of feet.
if knee problem sub in sit-ups

if you've never done before do 10 min or 5 min.

half way through you'll know where weakness is cardio, upper body, or legs.

If you like that, you'd really enjoy Tabata training.

I did a 4 minute Tabata this morning following my P90X Plyometrics. I must say, I was impressed. When I first Googled it I was kind of questioning how much of a challenge it would be, not questioning any more :D

This makes me laugh bc I've been there. When I first read about cross fit workouts, I thought they were too easy to even be a workout. I got over that the first day at the gym when I was pretty sure I was going to vomit. How can 4 minutes be so horrible? Ha

Tabata's a great workout. Even if you're doing just sprints for the whole time.

It was nice out this past weekend so I hiked 6 miles on Saturday and 4 miles with a 75lb pack. Tomorrow is bench and shoulders, plus my "skills" course. Thursday is squats, deadlifts and skills course.

Sure, the gym I go to is 40 yards long and has a concrete floor. They have a sled that can have weights stacked on it and it can be pushed/pulled. I attach a 20' tow strap to it and stack on 180lbs.

1. With strap over shoulder, run sled to opposite side of gym, hand over hand pull the sled to you once your back is to the wall.
2. Grab sledge hammer, overhand hit tire 10 reps right, left, and from strong side
3. Flip tire back to original position
4. Grab strap and backwards pull sled to original start position, hand over hand pull sled to you once your back is to the wall.
5. Pick up farmer's carry bars with two 25lb weights (75lbs each), walk to end of gym and back
6. Pick up 75lb medicine ball and walk to end of gym and back
7. Pick up sand bag (unknown weight, but heavy) throw over shoulder, walk to end of gym and back.

Rest for 1-2 minutes, repeat for total of 4 cycles. Go as fast as you can without dying.

It may not sound like much but it's a kick in the rear. Especially after my normal workout. I absolutely despise doing cardio on machines and would much rather do something like this that builds cardio endurance and strength. The farmers carry and medicine ball are tough as my hand strength begins to go and the sledge hammer will really get your cardio going.

No problem. The trick is to go slow and pace yourself. I've come close to puking the first couple times I did it. It's very cardio intense so if you're older or cardio isn't quite up to snuff, take it very easy. I am serious when I say go as fast as you can but don't kill yourself. I modeled it after the skills course some Fire Departments do for exercise. I've noticed a benefit just in recovery time when I stop to rest while hiking steep slopes.

That still cracks me up to this day. "Are you sure you want to do that? Do you really want to play that game with me? You better think about it first. Just how much do you weigh anyways?" :D

I just started on the elliptical again, I would like to lose about 20 pounds before I kick up the cardio and weights. What do you all think of the elliptical machine for getting into elk shape? Is it enough? Running for me is doable, however I get an extremely nagging pinched nerve in my lower back which lays me up for at least 2 weeks which seems counter productive. Any ideas?

I think I would ask a doc for that one.
Does one have to run. I think not. The theory here is the better the shape your in the harder you can hunt.

Been using the elliptical since Christmas because there is 4' of snow outside. I do it everyday switching between high resistance low speed and the high speed fat burning programs. Whats nice is the quick improvements in stamina you see with the timed programs. it keeps me motivated. Will get outside with a weighted pack as soon as it warms up, I think the elliptical made me ready

I have noticed the stamina increase you are talking about, it is amazing how fast it actually comes. I may have to try the speed/resistance routine you are referring to. Thanks for the input so far guys!
