When to move?

How many days do you give an area before a major move? On a ten day hunt, when would you pick up camp if you haven't found any elk and head to your second area you've researched or hunted before?

If I dont see fresh sign I move and keep moving. Soon as I cut a new track or wet droppings or urine spots Im hunting

I'm talking about picking up camp and abandoning an area altogether. Major move.

I tend to keep moving from the start til I find them in most cases however I'm learning more and more to trust my gut. If I feel the elks presence in the area I give it more time and in the Gila a couple years ago, going on a gut feeling really paid off after giving an area a couple days with no activity before it all came together suddenly

I give it a day, maybe a day and 1/2. if im not finding any signs im leaving. you've only got ten days. now after a move your down to 8 days left. Im talking about a complete move.

hunt thru Monday: Labor Day hunt and he last week.
I moved my camp on Saturday or Sunday for the Monday hunt
I dont always pick up camp but often drive 10-30 miles away from camp for the afternoon and hike in for the evening hunt

I do not drive in the morning to where I hunt. I will move my camp to that area then walk in

trusting you gut paid off for the two of us last yr big time.

come to think of it we move a couple of times within the area say 5 miles or so and started to find elk but our camp never moved. I would have been really hesitant to move camp after day 1 or 2 in that area. its just to big to relocate all together. if we spend 5 days in there and didn't find any signs then maybe.

The beauty of that unit is you can camp at a relatively central location like we did and drive to a lot of different areas pretty easy without having to move camp.

We hunt out of a base camp. I wouldn't move, just get into the truck and drive to spot #2. If you are talking about a spike camp 2 1/2 days at the most. That give you spot #2 and #3 if need be. besides you can hunt north the 1st day and south the 2nd or East west whatever your area looks like.

Experience with an area will tell you a lot. If I had never been in an area, I would quickly move along until I found elk or fresh sign. With over 20 years hunting an area, I know they will show up. I just have to be patient. Trail cameras can make up for some experience. If you have patterned the elk in an area since mid July, and see they show up every ten days, you may wait for them. I guess the answer about when to move just depends.
