First is my backpack camp. It wasn't on a hunt it was just with my oldest boy on a fishing trip last year. Second is of our camp when we pack in with horses or right near a trail-head off the road. We have been blessed with many different styles of hunting available to us near by although road-less areas are limited.

Here's last seasons home for us. We plan on being back in the same area, so we fab'd up an elevated firewood rack, and stacked it with as much wood as we could find, so even if it's a monsoon like it was last fall, we have dry, dead wood, already off the ground.

My first thought when I saw this picture was, WOW look at the size of that tree. I wouldn't want to be caughht near that tree in a thunderstorm. The tallest tree especially a lone tree makes a good ground rod for lightning.

Mark, how tall is your walltent to the ceiling? It looks pretty short in the 1st photo but taller in the 2nd one. How do you like the Mr Heater.? My son & I just picked one up for ours but have only used it a couple of times at temps no lower than 30deg. We also have a woodstove but thought the heater would be great for mornings when the fire is out. What's your thoughts?

Not to speak for elkduds, but I can share some experience on the Mr. Heather Buddy Heater (which I think is pictured there?). It works okay, but doesn't kick off a ton of heat and it will burn through propane fairly quick. If all you are using it for is warming up in the morning, it could be sufficient. What we have switched to is a sunflower heater that sits on top of a 5 gallon propane tank. We found one of these that has two separate burners and we now use that pretty much exclusively at night instead of the wood stove. Keep in mind that we hunt rifle season, so it's probably a little colder when we are up there, but that thing is awesome. No having to wake up at night to stoke the fire and those tanks will last a good 3-4 days depending on how much they get used at night before bed and how high we have them turned up. You will notice in my picture that we have two wall tents that we hook together. We sleep in the back one at night and close the doors between the two of them to keep the heat primarily in the back tent, so when we wake up in the morning, the front tent (our eating courters) is freezing. However, opening the doors for a couple of minutes and spinning the heater that way will warm it up in there fairly quick, especially if we get the stove going for a couple minutes.

Anyway, sorry for the long rambling, but if you are looking for more heat than that buddy heater, definitely consider a sunflower. A lot warmer and uses far less propane in my experience!

We also used a Buddy heater this past year. I have the Big Buddy. Pluses are no stoking of a fire and no smoke. Downside was trying to get it lit after a tank change. We were running from 20 lb bulk tanks and it takes a while to purge the line before the pilot will light. Also if you are running from a bulk tank, be sure to buy the hose with the regulator. Even with an inline filter I had performance issues running a non regulated hose from a bulk tank.

This year probably going back to the wood stove.

Gotcha, that's the same radiant heater we've used in the past, those ole boys are one hot bad boy when going full bore! By the way we do have the extra hose & regulator needed to run bigger & multiple tanks for the heaters. I do like them for quick heat but find they only heat room air, once they are shut down it gets cold quickly. The woodstove is radiant heat & warms up room articles thus the heat lasts longer even when stove has been out for a while plus wood heat just seems to warm the bones on those colder nights & mornings, god you gotta love hunting in those walltents, there's nothing comparable! (grin) Thanks.

That was some other brand of propane heater (not Mr. Buddy), a cabinet w a bulk tank inside, worked poorly @ 10K elev. I replaced it w a single burner tanktop heater after 1 season. This tent is about 6'6" @ the peak, the sidewalls are 3'. So it is lighter, and the heat stays down near the cots. If I ever want it taller, I can add a strip of canvas along the bottom edge and "stretch" the upright frame poles. Most of the time that 2 mantle Coleman lantern is all U need for heat in the mornings and evenings.

Another thing about propane is that it is wet heat. For every molecule of propane you burn you get 4 molecules of water. Or for every 20lbs of propane you produce about 13 pounds of water. I think this is a lot of the reason why we feel cold so fast once the heater is turned off.

All the high camps were either backpacking trips or scouting missions (and yep, I packed water). I camp low when elk hunting and right next to water if possible. The thermals come down in the morning and it does no good being above the elk in my experience.

I had an umbrella tent like that on my first elk hunt back in 1980! It snowed so much in the flattops on that hunt the side wall split open under the weight of the snow and spilled snow in on our bags. that is cool that someone still has one like it.

Easeup: I got that tent in about 1970-1971 from Monkey Wards. It is still good canvas and I have never done anything to maintain it. I doubt the trailer lasts as well, and it takes a lot more maintenance.
