elk hunting after hipreplacement

hello to everyone on this forum yes I`ve been a lurker. Ben a little gun shy after experience on other forum. I almost posted on that forum as to why everybody could not be more like elknut. Then I found out elknut has his on forum and even better everyone seems a lot like elknut. Whats not to like.
I was wondering if anyone has experience elk hunting after a hip replacement, I haven`t had one yet but think it may be coming down the road. thanks for your help.

Bob, thanks for the kind words & for stopping by! What does your doctor have to say about your probability of down time? Too, how old are you? I know as I get older I sure do heal slower! (grin) Share a bit more info that your doctor may have mentioned & hopefully someone here can elaborate on that! Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Bob. I have not had any hip replacement surgery, so I cannot speak directly to that. In our camp are some older gents that have hip, knee and back problems. They have found tree stand hunting works for them. My son has promised he will hang my stand whenever I get too old to do it myself. I may get his to set up one of those stair lifts while he is at it. They advertise they work even when the power goes off. lol Just find yourself a good water hole to set a stand over, and bring along a capable partner to "help" pack out your elk.

Welcome! My father had a hip replacement a few years ago and he has never felt better hunting! I don't know any details regarding the procedure etc, just that it has made a world of difference for him and he's still up in the hills with us every year and better then ever

I haven't had one but have talked to plenty of people who have. Jaquomo Feral just had one last week and his PT is coming along fine. Like with every surgical procedure they have refined the methods and products they use and the only question you'll be asking yourself is why didn't I do this sooner. Talk to your Dr. and let them know about your hunting plans. I know of 2 people who had hips replaced, they both were ready to hunt elk in the fall. Key is to give yourself enough time to heal and rehab. Everyone is different but if you followed Dr. orders, do physical therapy, and stay active you should be in the woods. Both guys took it easy the first year after surgery but they were out elk hunting. Best of luck to you if or when you have it done!

my dad had both knees replaced on the same day. He was very pleased with deal. 6 months later we hiked all over the Sangre deCristos together.

I had been staying out of the mountians for archery hunting. 14 months ago I set a few traps for cats and soon dicovered I was in a lot of pain walking side-hilling snow covered slopes
The day after I pulled traps my Doc called and said I needed a hip and I had been bone on bone for years and coulnd understand hoe I could tolerate the pain.
I had an injury 30 years ago in Tae Qwon Do My hip was always sore. I jut lived with it. My legs began to fall asleep when I sat in church on the benches and soft chairs.
I had shoulder surgury a year ago in Febuary I would say that I had to be more carefull with my shoulder than my hip replacement ( My bow is set at 45 lbs )
May 30th I had myhip sugury. In September I was able to hunt fairly hard on the flats. I relized I liked hunting the flats because fore years I could hunt all day. At that point I was walking 5 miles every other day
So with recovery during June July and August Following the docs plan , walk. and walk some more
Realistically While I dont hunt on Sundays I would not have been capable because I really needed a day of rest.
I had one day I had hunted hard in the morning then got on a herd til dark , I would say I covered 13, 14 miles that day. ( on the flats) I spent all of Sunday recovering
9 months later I still cant do what I was doing with the pain I use a pedometer and most days I take 9000-12000 steps ( 5- 8 miles a day)

My suggestion. Get Sweds book and tree stand hunt most of the day
Right now My doc says I need to build streagth. I made the comment I had to cross the river with a staff,.. He said I should be using a staff anyway
It looks like life will be better buy next season
One thing While I tolerated the pain before I now dont have pain waking me and get a good nights sleep

find a good DR. a friend of mine starts round 2 in a week, after both hips were done 5 years ago he has been sitting in the truck watching us hunt. One gopher pile, tree limb or hole he was brushing himself off and in a lot of pain.

My guess is you would do great if you follow Drs advise. There was a football player in the Super Bowl that just had it. Go slow and listen to doc.

Percy Harvin had hip surgery but didn't have a hip replacement.

I've not had a replacement but fractured the neck of my femur a few years ago and the repair was similar. I don't have any troubles in the mountains. Physical Therapy is your friend. Make sure you go and do the exercises as prescribed and you wont' have any trouble.

I'm 41 and just had my 2nd knee replacement (same knee). The first one didn't go so well and had to be replaced within a year. I can't stress enough get the best doctor available. I am 2 months from my last surgery and my goal is to be able to elk hunt either this fall or next. I know the Ozarks aren't comparable to the Rockies but turkey season is next month and I will have no problem putting in the miles needed to kill my public land gobblers.

I want to thank everyone for your advice and your welcome to the site. I guess I should say I`m not there yet, but doing certain things seem to aggravate it pretty quick. Things are maybe shaping up for a elk hunt in September. Its been 4 years since my last hunt. hip wasn`t to bad then. I`m thinking if I don`t make it out this year it could be 4 or 5 more years when I hopefully will be retired before I make it out again and good chance a new hip. So I was wondering, but it sounds like a good doctor and doing the right things it won`t be a problem. Thanks again.

My doc told me realistically 18 months.
My physical therapy was walk and ride my ATV. After the the 3 months One day I would walk 4-5 miles or ATV a few hours , then I was worn out the next day
During the season most days after hunting hard in the morning I was taking 1/2 of a hydrocodone about 10AM then take a nap about 11 , to be able to hunt the rest of the day.

A pack might be tough
9 months later caring weight I feel weak and the pain comes back while weighted down. I feel out of shape. I can walk a lot but even 50 foot elavation I feel like Im sucking air

Hey Lefty, I`m sorry to hear to hear its not going as well as you would like. Is your doctor got any ideas or does he think your doing ok. A 4 to 5 mile walk sounds good I guess if you did not have all the pain your having.
